Preception is in the eye of the beholder. If an enemy attacks on our soil, threatening our way of life, we label them a terrorists, rightfully so.

Now we invade and want to make their life better, stabilize a country, build an infrastructure, train an army, but for some that is threatening their way of life. In this scenario, who is the terrorist and who is the patriot?

Very true. I used to discuss this very topic in with Soldiers in Iraq. It is all about your vantage point. The British Army considered the United States Army during the American Revolution essentially terrorists.

In both scenarios you both a terrorist and a patriot. You're terrorist to the people's homeland you're attacking that don't agree with you and you are a patriot for defending your nation of origin's honor, or whatever

Great question.....two things come to mind.

1) As a nation, we need to start accepting that our way of life is not always the best way of life and doesn't always fit into other cultures (Iraq and Afghanistan from my experience are great examples of this.

2) Does our invovlement help national interests? I am not always up to speed on this, but I would think that at the political level, this drives a lot of what we do and why!

Just my thoughts!

Democracy doesn't seem to be very easily accepted in the Middle East, how long will we fight, how many billions will we spend? How many men and women will die before we realize that Islam isn't conducive to a free way of life? (Americanism) obviously there are Muslims that want a different way of life and come here to start over. Perhaps we need to debrief all Muslims that want citizenship, and find out what makes them different and exploit that ideal...

I understand what you mean. I have spoken to several Muslims and they feel the way we do obviously. Just as we don't want anyone threatening our way of living they also don't want to be threaten in their way of living. That not only means by the U.S., but also the terrorist or insurgent organizations that want to make them do it their way. I think when individuals come to our country it's because what we have to offer. We offer freedom to do whatever you want. Even though that has recently been challenged as well. The one thing that comes to mind is whenever the Muslim community wanted to build a Mosque near Ground Zero. Everyone person that was killed within the Twin Towers were Americans of every race and religion. I think they want a better way of living, but they want to do it their way not someone else's.
