How do you respond when someone says "Thank you for your service"?

I've never asked this question, and I've never seen anyone else ask it, but I'm curious. What do you say when someone thanks you for your service?
My Military ID is right next to my driver's license and debit card in my wallet, so it's visible if I have to show my driver's license for something or if I'm taking my debit card out to use. Very often, someone who sees it will ask what branch I was in. Then they will thank me for my service. My usual answer is "Thank you for your support." But I'm curious about how others respond to that.

MSgt Private RallyPoint Member I say thank you and often times ask if they served. If the person did not serve, they will usually remark that a relative or friend served, which often leads to interesting discussions.

It always makes me feel momentarily weird. But I do realize some people just want to make sure they say something. While others do it out of some weird feeling of obligation to say something. I just try not to make it even more weird when its the latter.

Most of us do not serve for the "thank you for your service" aspect.

This country's treatment of veterans (and to some extent service members) has come a long way since WWII and Vietnam. But there will always be a mix of people who see service members as some random selection from the spectrum of "baby killing stooge of the military industrial complex to the unquestionable heroes of the republic. We all know Soldiers and Veterans who run that spectrum and earn the derision or praise.

At the end of the day, we aren't special. Veterans day used to be about remembering why the military exists and what is could prevent in the future and not a way to pat each other on the back. And much like Memorial Day, it has become diluted by commercialization. Discount hounds, "thank me for my service" types, and the civil military gap widening for every WTFArmy or reported sexual assault moment has lowered the perception of professionalism that used to accompany service.

So every time someone thanks me for my service, I thank them for their support, no matter how performative.

I just say thank you normally. If I know them, I point out that the Army let me play with tanks and assorted other heavy equipment, shoot big guns and blow stuff up. One of the best jobs I ever had.

After 15 years in, I say something to the effect of "It's my honor to serve," "It's my pleasure," or just a simple thank you. Sometimes, I respond by initiating a conversation and talking about the military. After all, they brought it up.

"Thank you for your support" is a good answer. Hadn't thought of that response.
"My pleasure" or "it was an honor to serve", sometimes surprises people especially if they are being solicitous and feel obligated to comment.
Have just now read comments. Many I would not feel uncomfortable saying in response.

I was in a Costco store several years ago I was wearing a Navy ball cap when this young girl maybe 8 years old walk up to me. She stood there for a few seconds and when I turned towards her, she said "Thank you for your service." It brought a tear to my eye, and I was at a loss for words, but I did say "You are welcome"

I get embarrassed because I didn’t do it for the thanks. in a brief conversation, in response to a “thank you for your service” I told the young lass, I never know how to respond to that. She offered up the suggestion “thank you for your support“… And that’s what I now say.

I have a very particular way to answer that appreciation: "Thank you for your service". Long explanation: A veteran's service and sacrifice is their way to guarantee America's way of life and freedom. This freedom includes our ability to choose a career or an occupation that would, directly or indirectly, serve the community/nation at large. In doing so, a veteran's service has been honored and the responsible civilian is serving in his/her capacity. That's all we/veteran's ask for. -OAÁ /R

I read about a guy that replied, "you're worth it" whenever someone thanked him for his service. I have done this a few times. What I have trouble with is thanking other veterans for their service but I still do.

You know, I really hate that. Most times I hear it is at a couple of big box stores when I use my military discount, some of those folks are sincere but for most its just a platitude that say because they are required to. But for all instances I usually say thank you and continue to march on with my day.
That said, I just went on a KDVA Return to Korea trip and that had over 50 Korea vets travel to Korea (Cold War and Korean War). I felt quite honored by the way we were treated by all we encountered while we were there. I could not say thank you enough.

I think it would depend on my mood at the time. "Your welcome, glad I could help." & such is my most common reply. I served back in the early 1960s so it was not politically correct to even talk to anyone in uniform much less thank them for serving. Myself, I never much cared about such things; I was following the drum, that was all that mattered.

I usually say, "Thank you for thanking me." The responses from there vary. Depending on the age of the other person this has led to discussions of how this was not always so, especially right at the end of the Viet Nam era. Mostly, however, I find the exchange brief, sort of like, "how's the weather" and the other doesn't really listen to whatever you say.

I thank them for acknowledging my service. I get it quite often where I live in WV. Anytime I wear my Vietnam Vet hat, someone thanks me for my service. WV is a small state but very patriotic and there are many veterans throughout the state. In fact, I read long ago that based on our population, we have one of the highest percentages of veterans in the country.

I used to stop at this little diner for breakfast when I was on my way to my ADOS job. A couple times a week someone would want to pay for my breakfast because I was in uniform. I asked the waitress to tell anyone who offered that I would accept a cup of coffee but thats all. I get it. People wanted to do something to show support, but it gets old after the first couple times. One day it happened again so I picked a guy wearing dickies with a factory logo over the pocket and bought his breakfast. The waitress was confused when I said it was because he was in uniform. Thank you. However, I feel for the most part their statement was hollow as I started during Vietnam and finished with Desert Storm. With hostility was my greetings of the time. Today if I say I served during Vietnam, I am still treated with hostility or disdain in their voice. I had a Statute in my front yard which was upended and thrown to the ground about a year or so. It was a Soldier carrying a wounded soldier. It had a Dog tag around its neck. That was my Brother's Tag. My Brother was Infantry: C company 2nd 502 101st Airmobile Vietnam. I was attached as a Reservist to HHC 6th 502 101st Inf. Reg-Berlin year 1986. However I also served during Vietnam on Active Duty not in country. My last Active Duty MOS during Desert Shield and Desert Storm was Combat Medical Specialist 91A E5 and AD for Desert Storm was 91B E6. I was proud of my brother's service and as he stood in for me during Vietnam, I took a stand for him through his remaining life as his readjustment to America never occurred until a few days before he died in 2015. That is why the statute was placed in honor my Brother. I found his Dog Tag bent over and stomped on where the statue was originally placed in my front yard. And that is why it is hard for me to accept someone saying "Thank you for your service." With respect I will say thanks in return but I feel hollow inside when I say it.

I puzzled over how I should respond to this for a long time. In my "era" the options were: go to collage - get drafted - enlist - or head to the Great White North. Since Canada was much too cold for me, I had no desire to continue going to school, and I did not want to be drafted - I enlisted. I felt that my service was not an option so I was conflicted about my response. I have since settled on, "Thank you, it was an honor to serve."

IMO, its difficult to except thanks when you have been demeaned, insulted and attacked in this country as baby killers during and years after Nam! How many thank u's are really sincere and how many are just empty show. You'd have had to serve back in the 60s to really understand this. When people thank me for serving, in some ways it saddens and hurts. I'd almost rather not be thanked then to be reminded of the past. At times when being thanked, I think: "If they only knew what it was really like, returning not just with no honors, but absolute disdain. If you wore a military uniform, you could pretty much count on the coming insults. We should have been proud of wearing our uniforms and serving, but sadly that was not the case. So, for the most part, you can thank me by not thanking me.

That is why, when people thank me for my service, I answer back "appreciated" in an empty sort of way and just quickly move on!

That being said, if it looks as if it could turn into a conversation of value, I like the idea of following it up with "it was an honor" or "it was my privilege to serve" (even though it may not have seemed like much of a pleasure at the time.) I was at Walmart, I wear a disabled army veteran hat. An employee, a young man saluted me and thanked me for my service. I simply said you are welcome. sometimes I say it was an honor. these are my two responses. KISS...keep it simple stupid. If someone wants to know more, I'll tell them I served on active duty for over 21 years and was overseas 5 times and I miss being in the army, they were my other family and I miss them dearly. But keep it simple stupid or you might be misinterpreted. Never say anything about loss of life in a war zone. They can't relate.

Agreed it always seems awkward when you hear that; however, I used to say "It was my honor - Thank you." Recently have started answering their thank you differently - I now say "You are welcome, you were worth it." I over heard that from another vet, when a person was thanking him for his service. The person's response was "excuse me?" to which the vet replied - "I served because I love my country and all those within nor do I regret my service or all the time that I had to dedicate to complete my time. Which means it was all worth it and in turn means you were worth it." After thinking about it, I was taken with what he said and thought wow I that was really heart felt, I like that sentiment so now that is what I say. So to the unknow vet - thank you sir!

I wear my command ball caps every where so when a person say thank you for your service! I thank them right back for their comment, if they are also service connected I return the comment! Living in the Pensacola/Milton Fl. area you receive a lot of thank you for your service comments from civilians and other veterans! For anyone OK to wear their heart on your sleeve, I answer “you were worth it”. I was given this response by a Vietnam veteran and it punched me in the heart. After hearing this response for the first time I met a young Army Ranger who was injured in Iraq. When he thanked me for my service I told him that “he was worth it”. He, very wide eyed asked me why I would say that as we just met. I explained that everyone who benefits from the freedom “WE” provide by our service are worth it. We ended up talking for almost a hour. That is all. Stay safe.

My husband was a 2term combat vet Vietnam and pow he shot himself over the Afghanistan pull-out blasted all over the tv caused an already high suicide rate amoung veterans especially severe ptsd vets to skyrocket higher to an additional 37 per. So I feel the current gov,t. Has veteran blood on there hand due to how they handled and blundered the pull-out. He always spoke to young people about serving there country and about respecting veterans service and sacrifice. I continue these days myself. I will be getting in touch w/some one in the Trump Circle about this should he take office.

If it is a civilian telling me "thank you for my service", I usually reply "glad to oblige and thank you". If it is someone in uniform, I tell them thank you from this "cold war" veteran and also thank you for your service.
I might also add to what I say in responce, "if I had it to do all over again if I was able too".

I always try to say thank you and I appreciate you taking the time to mention it. As others have said I don't consider serving such a big deal, since every man on both sides of my family has served and all but a few in combat. I served 2 tours in Iraq, my dad served 2 tours and his only brother got drafted and he then figured that if he was going to serve it might as well be in combat as a "Shake &Bake" NCO. So I thank them for my relatives going back to before there even was a USA when my Great ×9 Grandfather came over to Georgia with General James Oglethorpe as an Irish Sergeant or the Great x7 Grandfather who served as Francis "Swamp Fox" Marion's Sergeant Major during the Revolution or the dozen who served with the Georgia Brigade in the Confederate Army. They're the ones who really deserve the thanks.

Thank them for their support. If the conversation continues afterwards, discuss the benefits of military service - noble profession, pride, benefits post-service (Insurance, education…it’s unmatched by any company!). My daughter is using my post-911 GI benefits and they should completely cover her 1st 2 years of school (AT LSU!!). That’s a HUHE benefit, that I’m sure a lot of people don’t know about. Bottom line, as mentioned above on the response - it’s not too difficult.

I just simply respond with "thank you." I get "thank you for your service" at least once a week; even 3X in a day depending on where I am. That's probably because my favorite baseball cap(s) to wear every day are those gifted to me that note Vietnam Veteran. I am not looking for praise but simply PROUD of being a veteran and having served 3 tours of duty in Vietnam. As a proud member of our local American Legion, we have donated several "Wall of Honor" to retirement homes. These walls honor those veterans residing there. There photos are placed on the wall which is our way to tell them "thank you for your service."

When somebody says that to me (with sincerity), I am humbled. When we returned home, we were spit on and called "baby-killers" by the uninformed idiots and treated with much disrespect. We also had to endure an endless bunch of quacks when we would go to discuss our memories, SOB's who should have had their medical license revoked! As I am older, I have those memories, but I am always grateful when somebody respects my time in the military, which was honorable. When I see an older guy (and I am 71) wearing a world war 2 or korean veteran cap, i make it a point to thank them for their time served.

I also remember the time I was drinking coffee with my ex-wife at the restaurant she managed. I looked out our side window and saw this little old man pull into the handicapped parking spot. His license plate indicated he was a former POW. He entered the restaurant and I went up to him and asked, "Sir, I hate to intrude, but i wanted to thank you for your service, and buy your meal for you." He thanked me and invited me to join him. He had been a survivor of the Bataan Death March. It really inspired me to see how he had taken a very bad time in his life and turned it onto good. He spent a lot of his time talking to people about how he turned his bad time into an inspiring message of hope and love for this country.

It was always an awkward moment for me until I heard a fellow Soldier respond with, "Thank you for your support." To me, my service wasn't anything special as a whole, but I loved what I did and felt like I was a part of something bigger than me. It was never about "me". And if it was a fellow Veteran who thanked me for my service, especially Vietnam Vets or earlier, I would respond with, "Thank you for paving the way for me. I just picked up the torch you handed off."

That’s my usual response.
Initially, it seemed awkward to me that someone was interested or actually cared about my service. I was still in my teen years when I joined. I was just having fun.
I was barely learning the ropes on how to become a man -a soldier; someone with responsibilities. Over the years, I began to understand about my job and internalizing a military mind, military bearings, and the meaning of our motto: “honor -duty and country.”
Serving was and it congreatest honor. Although, We are not the only ones who sacrifice a great deal -family’s sacrifices with us. It’s in that vein where I truly welcome and humbly accept my fellows countrymen, women or children’s support, when they gratuitously offer a:
“Thank you for your service!”

I am proud to live in Idaho where everyone and everywhere individuals thank me for my service. I proudly have a sticker on my car and where my Navy Vietnam ball cap of being in the Navy and serving our country. In the mornings at the middle school, I get to say the pledge of allegiance with my hat over my heart and with the middle school youth. God bless America.

I just say thank you. I don’t know who started the “thank you for your service” , but it has been an automatic statement or at a business it may be a required statement for the staff by the facility. Rarely meaningful. I was in Vietnam, still remember the anti military sentiment followed by our pay not being adjusted for inflation by President Ford.

2 Things…I don’t wear clothes, have number stickers, or otherwise advertise my time in service now that I’ve retired. Many with whom I work don’t even know. That’s helps avoid those situations. 2nd…I usually reply with, “Thank you for that. There are a lot more who sacrificed a lot than I did”.

I was fortunate enough to walk away after 27’ish years. Any weren’t. Thanks from others compounds my gratefulness and memory of those who couldn’t walk away or left the greatest part of themselves in the service. As a 20+ year medic, that was the greatest part of my service…taking care of others while in a clinical setting, and taking care of the team when we were out. I don’t find it nearly as awkward coming from each other as I do coming from others.

Not intending to get all sappy…Just to stay on topic, and in keeping with the awkwardness, “thank you” to each of you out there who served or are still serving. Don’t forget to reach out and check on each other, and not just on the big days marked on the calendar. We’re all going through something that perhaps only other service members understand. Some of us are closer than family. While God and his Son Jesus have been great to me and given me a wife and family that I don’t deserve, some of us only have or had each other. Be there for each other.

While not formally a thing…if you know someone who supported or is supporting a service member, or lost their service member, consider taking a moment to thank them for being there, supporting, or caring for that service member. It doesn’t have to be on Veteran's Day, but maybe some other time.

Be safe out there. Take care of yourselves and each other!

Somewhere in the last few years I read a good response is "Thank you, you're worth it". I've used this a few times. It catches people attention. At a baseball game this summer the veterans were asked to stand up and be recognized. A young lady (anyone <60) thanked me for my service. I used the "You're worth it" reply. She actually teared up. I made her day, and she certainly made an impact on me.

I also have heard many prior responses to this.( I am a Vietnam -War Vet, 67-69 , Helicopter Crew-chief ). When i returned to the "World " , it Truly was, as Bad a reception as has been described. But I have always worn ( for my own personal Pride ) a Military Ball Cap. I am Still,..proud of Me. One of my favorite Responses, (that i have heard) , is " You Were worth it ! ". Mostly i just Say ; " Thank You,.. these Days , it Means More than You Know." And when you notice Parents , directing a child, to approach me with a " Thank You , for your Service ", I truly want to turn and Cry.

I served near the end of the Vietnam war. I did not go to Vietnam, but every senior NCO and officer Captain and above had. These are the men who prepared me for combat as well as was possible without experiencing it. When Saigon fell I saw more than one tear on the faces of men who bore the physical and emotional scars of that war and who were often derided in public when in uniform, as was I even though I had never fired a shot in anger. When I first got out I kept a low profile on my veteran status, but the public perception of the military changed after the first gulf war, and I began to hear “Thank you for your service.” At first, I was bothered by this because I did not think I had done anything worthy of praise in comparison to what the Vietnam Vets had gone through. I eventually accepted it and now proudly wear my “Thank me for my service” hat, and when thanked I reply with a sincere “I appreciate that” and hope that these men lived long enough to receive this praise they truly deserved.

At first, it was an awkward moment where someone approaching me just to be nice was unexpected and found myself struggling for the right words, barely getting out nothing more than "you're welcome". As time passed, I recognized that some people just wanted to express their gratitude while others used it as an icebreaker to engage in conversation. My reply now is "you're welcome, and I appreciate your support". If they linger a moment then that's a chance to start up a conversation. People have questions and who better than vets to answer them! Granted, as more time passes since our service some things will change and certain insights become obsolete. At the end of the day, you get an opportunity to change or shape perceptions about military service.

I generally just give a lukewarm response; but, when I am caught off guard, I say, "whatever that means." Thank you.
But, yes, I personally think no one owes me, personally, anything. I just volunteered to serve (USMC 1969-71) because that was the thing to do. I didn't think I was doing anyone a favor. And, one capital thing you learm in the service is that you do what has to be done, reardless. Althought I firmly believe that my service dureing war time was a heck of an experience, I seldom feel anyone owes me thing. If anything, not a pun, thank God I came back alive albeit no whole, is that I feel I have complied with my basic civid duty.

Being a Vietnam Veteran, I never heard those words until recent years. It is my opinion that almost all people that say it totally mean it. I may be wrong, but I do think that most Veterans deserve it enough to have the courtesy to reply at least "You are welcome". It never bothers me rather they are civilians or veterans, there are some great conservations that follow. Then I wear my Vietnam cap or see someone wearing theirs, it has started conversations that were heart-warming. I was drafted and believe; we served for the man beside us and then our country. We were all just doing the job asked of us and the enemy soldiers in the fields the same. Be thankful for any well-meant thanks you get.

This is a hard one for me. I live in an area that have military people everywhere. I wear my hat or shirt to show I am proud to have served even though I see people that act entitled. When someone says thank for your service, I use to think why thank me I just did what I thought was a good thing and my duty. Now when they say this I say your welcome and step away. I still have a problem when told this, but I guess I always will. Especially when I think how my Father was treated when he returned from Vietnam.

It honestly depends on my state of mind that day. I usually feel uncomfortable and confused at the same time. What are they thanking me for? I served in a bureaucratic system that destroys evidence and refuses to recognize the real issues that cannot be resolved, no matter how much therapy one receives. I feel guilty because I did not serve in combat, and I feel uncomfortable because my fellow comrades don’t acknowledge my contributions to serving this great nation—one that seems to have lost its way because of DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and its misguided notions of inclusivity, where some believe they deserve to be treated better than anyone else.

It is uncomfortable, but I give thanks out of respect to the individual who may or may not sincerely comment. I valued the true camaraderie I experienced during my time in the military, especially with airmen who served in Vietnam. It was difficult to witness how some of them turned to alcohol and drugs. Additionally, I faced bullying for being Hispanic and from Puerto Rico, and I often found myself doing tasks while others just sat around chatting. These days, things are just as they are, and it seems no one really cares.

Vietnam era vet. That was never said to me until around 2016. I had to go to ER for an issue and the nurse, who was also a vet, said that to me. I responded thank you and said she was the 1st to ever say that. Now days checking out a Lowe's or Home Depot when I use the military discount the attendant always thanks me. A simple thank you is the best response.

I Guess I One One Of The Lucky Ones.
I Enlisted On My 17th Birthday; Upon Completion Of Basic I Was Sent To Little Rock AFB In Arkansas
Where I Discovered I Could Get A FREE Education, Which I Was Sadly Lacking, From The United Stated Armed Forces Institute (USAFI) ~ After Working In My AFSC For About A Year I Was Given Various Assignments And Enjoyed The Vast Majority Of My 4 Year Enlistment.. Then Stationed At Osan AFB, S. Korea, And Became A Good Friend With Quan, A South Korean Soldier Whom Took Me All Over South Korea, And I Made A Few Short Trips To Japan.. If The Tax Payers Ever Discovered How Much Fun I Had On Their Tax Dollar, They'd Probably Demand A Refund.. So How Do I Feel When Told "Thanks For Your Service"? Normally I Just Tilt My Head A Little To Indicate A "You're Welcome" While Being To Embarrassed To Make A Verbal Reply. ~ As I Stated: "I Guess I One One Of The Lucky Ones." And I DO Realize It. ~ And I Still Love The USAF For All It Did For Me; It Changed My Life For The Better And It's Been A GREAT RIDE

Quite some time ago this subject was brought up on a FB group, Disgruntled Underground 2.0 and one response said they respond with "You were worth it".
I tried this a couple of times and it made the person ponder exactly what they are thankful for.

I just thank them. I know some people get all knotted up about it and feel that it's not sincere, and sometimes it's not, but for those who mean it it's worth being nice and genuinely thanking them.

So, this question has so many answers depending on the nub that is asked it. I joined on 6-month cache in 1972, went active in April 73 to boot. 3 days after my enlistment Nixon came on the tube and said, "we all done there" and off I went to boot. I finished high school mid-term cuz I was so smart and after boot went back to my HS in my shiny new blues to stud about. A former buddy saw me strutting about proudly in my spanking new uniform and called me a baby killer and then spit on my shiny new shoes. The resulting discussion did not enhance our friendship and resulted in certain biological enhancements to the color of his face...
About 1991 or so at the beginning of Desert Storm (the first one) I had to go into town for of all things, a case of Loctite for the ship. Setting in my car at a stop light in my khakis, piss cutter on my scull, ribbons on my chest and waiting for the light to turn green, a random civilian crossing the street spies me through the windshield, pops tall and throws me a salute! Suddenly I'm a fricking hero! Well how bout that?
Over the years I hear this "thank you for your service stuff" all the time, sometimes from people my age and I appreciate it, and often from some kid with zits and a vapid stare at McDucks or something cuz the Boss said say it.... I am thankful for the former and I blow off the latter cuz they don't know and I can't explain.
What does this saying actually mean? Well from some folks it means a lot and I feel gratitude but a bit embarrassed, I didn't die, I served in a hole of an amphib most of my career and never dodged anything but a wrench from some frustrated non-rate... but I did the job and I did it to the best of my ability and I generally did it right - and I am and was damn proud to serve! So, I say I was proud to do my duty.
For the gum chewers and ain't got a cluers... Whatever "you're welcome" because why be rude?
But how you answer the question and how you feel about it is up to you. For you youngsters who started your career about the time of 9/11 and are used to being regarded as heroes, I'm glad for you, for us Viet Nam/End of Nam guys, the experience has been different.
Regardless... I give you a heartfelt "THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR SERVICE" you have done and are doing well!

I say the same, because without there support while we are serving our nation, things might fall apart. To me there is never just 1 its always 2 or more that make it happen. I severed while my friends that couldn't serve kept our Nation strong with there being here running things.

That’s a tough one for me because I spent 6 years in the peacetime reserves. 81-87

But I do know that at one time in my life I gave Uncle Sam a blank check which he chose to cash any way he wanted.

He wanted me to drive forklift one weekend a month and 2 weeks in the summer for 6 years.
