SPC Elijah Henry: You did a good job with your research. I commend you for that. I found some good posts of my own that I would like to share:
If 388 Marines holding out for 16 days against an entire Japanese battle fleet, killing 820 Japanese, sinking two destroyers and damaging 3 cruisers, a submarine, 5 destroyers, and 11 fighters while downing 2 bombers is a defeat, yes.

If one Regiment of Marines destroying an entire division of Chinese before fighting their way out of Chosin against vastly superior numbers is defeat, then, yes.

During WWI Lt. Cates said, "I have only two men out of my company and 20 from another company. We need support, but it is almost suicide to try to get it here as we are swept by machine gun fire and a constant barrage is on us. I have no one on my left and only a few on my right. I will hold." That's the typical situation if the Marines lose a fight.
In this case, they won...the battle of Belleau Wood.

From what I can find the closest thing to a defeat in the Vietnam war was the loss of Supply Column 21. Five of the 27 Marines were killed and 17 wounded as they held off the enemy until daybreak leaving only 7 capable of fighting with 2 of those walking wounded. That means the effective fighting capability of the unit was effectively 24%, well below the standard 50% measure that usually marks a force as combat ineffective (i.e. effectively destroyed). However there were 564 dead Viet Cong found in the area of the three surviving Amtracs of Supply Column 21. The seven remaining Marines had fought without food, sleep,
or water for two days. When the seven survivors were pulled from their Amtrac, they had less than 250 rounds of ammunition left. So if that's losing then it gives a whole new meaning to going down fighting. Semper Fi!

"We have two companies of Marines running rampant all over the northern half of this island, and three Army regiments pinned down in the southwestern corner, doing nothing. What the hell is going on? "

You cannot exaggerate about the Marines. They are convinced to the point of arrogance, that they are the most ferocious fighters on earth- and the amusing thing about it is that they are.

It does not matter if it is true or not. Every one wishes they were Marines.

Come on! We all know we want to be Air Force. I have Airman tell me all the time how jealous I am of them and their cushy lifestyle.

Cpl Micah Wing You did not offend me. One of my closest and dearest friends works in my office....He is a former Marine and a DI at Paris Island. For the Marines birthday I got him a small cake with the Eagle, Globe and Anchor that said "Happy Birthday Marine Corps". For the Army's birthday he got me a huge cake that took up half my desk. It had to set him back a $100. It said, "Fuck the Army!" He then invited everyone in the office to come by my desk and get a piece of cake.
