The Army is looking for hundreds of drill sergeants to serve on active duty and in the Army Reserve.

Wow! Times have sure changed. I don't remember getting any extra pay and the assignment was only for 18 months unless they decided to ship you to Vietnam before that. The guarantee of an 18 month assignment was one of the main reasons that many applied. Overall it was a good job except for the long hours the first few weeks of each cycle.

At one point in time didn't male applicants have to be E6 or higher and females E5 and higher? Nice to see that its just 5 across the board now.

When I made Sergeant back in 1992, I was asked by my Platoon Sergeant to come up with a list of 3 positions for my NCOER. I informed him that I wanted 1. Tank Commander 2. Drill Sergeant 3. Line Unit in Germany. (I was working Brigade Staff at the time.) Unfortunately I got picked by D of A for Recruiting. Hated it.

I think it is a little funny as just alone the 95th division kicked out/ removed over 500 drill sergeants yet they want more.
I find it funny that they are digging and searching for anything they can. Now there is type 1 and type 2 offensives that they are searching even 15 years back to try and cut numbers yet they want more
It is all about a agenda and it is crap. Good drills can no longer so there jobs because of what is going on its a constant game
We need you we need drill sergeants yet sorry we have no mission for you

Whats the deal with the AGR restrictions? Im an AGR E-5(P) and I only put the P to show Im qualified. My dream job is to be somewhere in generating the force or RTSM. I love training and leading Soldiers, it is what I am best at. Its harder to get these positions because Im AGR. Many Drill Sergeants and Instructors dont want these jobs and are forced into them. Why not take the guys like myself that would kill to get one.

The reason the Army needs more NCOs to volunteer for this is because screening and qualifications are so high many NCOs don't qualify . I have had two NCOs in my company volunteer and get denied or sent back home have being in DSS for one month.

High school students are beating 60 year old teachers for taking their cell phones away during class. These trophies to humanity and proper parenting then join the military. The Drill Sergeant isn't allowed to upset mommy's precious angel without being called abusive, racist, or a big meanie. The turds are calling lawyers before even notifying the CoC these days. There isn't enough Jameson Irish whiskey on the planet to get me to volunteer for that no win scenario. 25 years ago, those magnificent bastages at Fort Benning with the brown round would be inprisoned if they tried the trail these days. For all of you who served in that capacity.........

I can honestly tell you the caliber of recruit these day, is disheartening. I could be biased working only the Medical side, so maybe I see the worst.

Honestly I've even paused and looked objectively, but it's no hope. Our recruiting pool is facing the same issues national universities are - the people "coming to age" have been so coddled now that they're turning 18 and have zero coping skills. Regular day to day stressors of adult life are overloading these kids. Never mind the pressures of Basic/AIT.
The horrible thing is much like the Universities, the Army is pandering to them too.

The generation is different. It's not an excuse to prepare ourselves by filling in our ranks with half hearted training. Adapt and overcome. If an SF pipeline can take a candidate from being a 42A to an 18 series, I wholeheartedly believe that the backbone of the NCO corps will not give way to rotten excuses for soldiers. When you give into the mindset it will show in your training and how you treat your subordinates. I personally loved the discipline in the older training methods. Just because it is raining doesn't mean that we don't fight the spoiled ideology.

The Army has plenty of drill sergeants. They just aren't using them all. I've seen active duty drill sergeants doing some incredibly STUPID details instead of training their PVTs.

I have read a bunch of responses.I'm noticing a trend of sub par recruits. Let there be no mistake this was the same in the 1970s. Of course we all know what the 1st 2 weeks are for. Plt started with 35-40 recruits ended with 20-25 . I gave no crap nor took any. I have no problem saying I won Drill SGT of the cycle 4 times. Was chose for a male plt in the BIET test 7th battalion 2nd BCT Brigade. You can read the results for your self . All I'm saying is you can train professionals if you are a professional.
