For starters, the line cooks asked me (as I walked up to get chow) asked if I wanted steak and eggs. Then there was the fact that the tables had table cloths made out of cloth. Then when I was done eating, I did as all Army Soldiers do in that I picked up my tray and was looking for the tray return. So, I asked a civilian employee of the DFAC, and she just looked at me and said, "Oh, don't worry about that. Just leave it on the table and we will take care of it." I was absolutely flabbergasted. It by far had the best chow, it had a sub sandwich line, steak and ham line, mountains of chicken wings, pizza, and yogurt/ protein shakes. Ate in all services dining facilities. I won't include any ships' food service. Two facilities that stand out to me are:

Coast Guard Training Center - Petaluma, CA (home of Coast Guard cooks school) The regular dining facility works in conjunction with the school's facility and the outcome of that is so delicious and there are so many choices of food you have a hard time deciding what to take.

Fort McNair - Washington, D.C. (DFAC for the Army's "Old Guard") Was across the street from the old USCG Headquarters Building and many Coasties ate there daily. Great food and the atmosphere was great, too.

Also, let me take this opportunity to thank all military cooks, mess cooks, mess attendants, scullery personnel, etc. You are usually under appreciated and under loved.

Signed: former wardroom mess cook USCGC MACKINAW (WAGB 83) - 1979 SCPO Private RallyPoint Member Thu, 08 Mar 2018 17:57:10 -0500 2018-03-08T17:57:10-05:00 2015-04-17T07:09:25-04:00
