Any man who says he is an American, but something else also, isn’t an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag… We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language… and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people.”

Nothing wrong with plain talk, simple and very understandable......only improvement would be to publish this as the standard so any immigrants would know ahead of time what the expectations were.

I would agree with Roosevelt but add that one can assimilate and become an American and still have their cultural identities as well. The Irish, and Germans and Polish immigrants who came to our country in the 20s, 30s, and 40s, didn't call themselves Irish-Americans or German-Americans or Polish-Americans, they were Americans but each with their own cultural identities.

It is so simple and straight forward it will be lost on most and viewed as anti-immigrant, xenophobic and every other kind of phobic you can think to add. I would say that this is not a progressive view on immigration but a traditional view on immigration.

I think to put it just as simply as Roosevelt did 108 years ago, this is not to say we should forget our pasts, but that we should embrace our futures when we come to this country and ask to be included as a member of this country.
