The best unit, in my humble opinion/experience was 2D BN (ABN) 503D Infantry "The Rock", 173D ABCT "Sky Soldiers" 2008-2011. It was a hard unit and the OPTEMPO was crazy, but you could not beat the camaraderie, prestige, undying loyalty, and outstanding leadership of its NCOs and Officers. The Paratroopers were awesome. They worked hard and played harder than your average trooper. After being injured getting into the Q-Course and becoming a " medical holdover" I was fortunate enough to work directly with the Quiet Professionals of the Special Forces, Ranger Medics, ForceRecon Corpman, CAG Medics, etc., out of JSOMTC and E Co., 1st SWTG (ABN) JFKSWTCS at Fort Bragg. Having been directly mentored by the Dean and Associate Dean of the school I can say it was definitely the best experience I have had involving the military. We served there in some very hard conditions before going to Fort Carson for 11 months. We reflagged as 1-9IN and were split from our BDE during the second trip to Iraq. We found ourselves in harder sitation on the same COP again for 15 months this time. We were able to lead the charge under Charles (Chuck) Ferry and win the streets over, and two monthes before we left we were eating in the homes of streets of Ramadi without gear and the city was rebuilding itself at a astonishing rate. I was attached to the Office of Military Cooperation and responsible to write, teach, research as a member of a Mobile Training Team, US Embassy, Cairo, Egypt. <br /><br />During the Arab Spring event, and Obama presidency, I saw people I taught on CNN.
