There are a lot of great units out there in the military services. What was the best unit you ever served in?

I enjoyed every unit I was ever in for different reasons, but if I had to choose one, it would have to be the 300th MP as we were very close knit and family like, every single person I knew from PVT to CDR looked out for each other and went out of their way to take care of one another in the field and during regular shift duties.

2nd choice would be the 800th MP BDE during DS, this was another unit that took the extra time and effort to watch out for and take care of its Soldiers.

Even though it was only 2 years out of the 26 total that I served, without a doubt the best unit I served in was D/1/11th ACR in Fulda, Germany. It was more a family than a mere unit, and the training we did was tough, demanding and always fun!

The greatest unit I have been in was the Alpha Company 82nd Engineer Battalion, 1ST EN BDE, 1SG INF DIV. 2003-2005 OIF II and KFOR 4B.

Great leadership and the best soldiers I served with.

As low-speed as it sounds: HHC, 164th QM GP

The NCOs and Officers took great care of the Soldiers. The training was realistic and aimed at mastering skills needed to perform our mission. The Soldiers were highly motivated. Everyone looked out for one another. It was truly as great experience for me.

My current unit has the opportunitiy to be my favorite unit, once we work through a few issues. It is a dymanic and improving environment thanks to some great leaders and the willingness of the Soldiers to improve.

D Trp, 3rd Squadron, 6th Cavalry regiment, Camp Humphreys Korea. One of the tightest Armament Shops Ive ever been apart of, hard working, a Commander and 1SG who never failed to take care of their Soldiers, even if it meant taking it on the chin from the SCO. Miss those days very much.

I have been in a lot of great units. The best unit, in my humble opinion/experience was 2D BN (ABN) 503D Infantry "The Rock", 173D ABCT "Sky Soldiers" 2008-2011. It was a hard unit and the OPTEMPO was crazy, but you could not beat the camaraderie, prestige, undying loyalty, and outstanding leadership of its NCOs and Officers. The Paratroopers were awesome. They worked hard and played harder than your average trooper. I would not trade my experience there for anything.

That is an easy answer for me. After being injured getting into the Q-Course and becoming a " medical holdover" I was fortunate enough to work directly with the Quiet Professionals of the Special Forces, Ranger Medics, ForceRecon Corpman, CAG Medics, etc., out of JSOMTC and E Co., 1st SWTG (ABN) JFKSWTCS at Fort Bragg. Having been directly mentored by the Dean and Associate Dean of the school I can say it was definitely the best experience I have had involving the military. The quality of leadership, hands on medical training, and mentorship will always hold a special place in my heart and mind. De Oppresso Liber!

D Co 4/12 Infantry Baumholder, GE (The Rock) from 1994-1997. We trained hard all of the time and played even harder. The training really helped us become one hell of a team and really shined through when we went to Bosnia in 1996.

2d Battalion, 3d US Infantry Regiment (Patriots), 3d Stryker Brigade, 2d Infantry Division 2005-2008. The entire damned battalion. I'd turn in my stripes and be a Private in an instant as long as I had the same leaders and peers in that unit. At the same time, it is my curse because it has caused me to experience increasing levels cognitive dissonance every day of my career in the 6 years since. I know what the Army could and should be.. What I experience and witness on a daily basis makes me weep inside. Hence, ETS 2015. As they say, "It ain't your father's Army anymore." Hell, it isn't my Army anymore either.

I have been apart of 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment for 3 years; 4th Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Aviation Regiment for 1 year; and 1st Attack Reconnaissance Battalion, 1st Aviation Regiment for over 6 years. My time with 1-1 ARB is by far the best I have had. It's not the leadership that makes it great, it's the family environment we create amongst ourselves. We have had outstanding Battalion Command groups and not so outstanding Battalion Command groups, the same for Company Command groups, but it's the pride and unity that keeps this unit so great. During OIF 07-09 our unit won Best Active Aviation Unit of the Year.

Not just being in 1-1 ARB makes me proud to be in the best unit, being in the 1st Infantry Division makes me proud. Just knowing the history of the division is something to be proud of.

The United States Air Force! All of my assignments had their pluses and minuses. There were good and bad things about all of them. What makes the military so great, is that if something isn't going right, wait a little while, leadership will change and so will the climate of the unit.

In my 23 year I have served with many units in a lot of
different ranks. I think I have the most
pride in the 1058th Transportation Company as I had the pleasure of being
the Company Commander for a bit more than 2 years. The best over such a career is hard to
say. The best units almost always have
the best people as the primary reason why they are the best and I have been in
several units that had highly motivated, well educated, hard working people who
can to each formation with a willingness to do a great job and help out there
fellow soldiers. Measuring the best like
that I have been fortunate to be in the best unit several times and I can count
the 1058th among them.

4th Battalion 31st Infantry Regiment, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, NY. The soldiers I served with in 4-31 were the finest I have ever worked with, I would follow the majority of them into the bowels of hell to fight the devil himself. Great soldiers and leaders alike.

A fantastic platoon sergeant, combined with a great group of cavalry scouts, and a healthy mixture of the Rakkasan culture made for the best group of soldiers I've ever served with.

Coast Guard Training Center Yorktown Virginia! One of two training centers for the Coast Guard were I was a Pastry Chef at the Officers and Chiefs Dining Facility running daily operations in the kitchen. I was able to help establish and participate on the Coast Guards first Culinary Arts team from 2005-2007 and then led my own team in 2009. I was also able to expand the Catering abilities of that facility which in tern allowed me to win Sailor of the Quarter second quarter of 2007. Over all an amazing experience and was able to make friendships and contacts that will last a life time!!

I'd have to say it was a group of guys coming out of Korea as 2nd IBCT 2ID as a member of the 1-503IN serving in Ramadi. We served there in some very hard conditions before going to Fort Carson for 11 months. We reflagged as 1-9IN and were split from our BDE during the second trip to Iraq. We found ourselves in harder sitation on the same COP again for 15 months this time. We were able to lead the charge under Charles (Chuck) Ferry and win the streets over, and two monthes before we left we were eating in the homes of streets of Ramadi without gear and the city was rebuilding itself at a astonishing rate.

During the Clinton presidency, If it wasn't my best unit it was my life game changer. I was attached to the Office of Military Cooperation and responsible to write, teach, research as a member of a Mobile Training Team, US Embassy, Cairo, Egypt.

During the Arab Spring event, and Obama presidency, I saw people I taught on CNN. That was a wow. Of course I am retired now and they are serving life terms in their military.

Would I go back there? Yup...in a heart beat.

I honestly have to say the best unit I have served in was my 1st unit: HHC, 18th Engineer Brigade. I had some of the best mentors while serving with Brigade and learned a lot from Senior NCO's and Officers. I can honestly say that unit has molded me into the NCO I am today! "Swords Up!"

I actually enjoyed all of them, for various reasons. For the most part, I think you bring happiness with you, rather than finding it where you go.

Also, I think that "best" is really subjective, and changes as the leadership and environment changes.

I have only had one bad unit in my 23+ year career and I transferred out of it quick (poor command structure that didn't take care of the troops' basic needs like water in the field). If forced to choose, I would have to say that my first love has always been, Armament Section, Aircraft Maintenance Platoon, A Troop, 1st Squadron (Air)/17th Cavalry, 82nd Airborne Division.
