The founders had a vision that ordinary men, could/would leave their current occupation (profession or trade), seek office, serve their country and return to their former life. I don't think they envisioned "career politicians" because that is very close to feudalism which they just escaped.
If that's accurate, then The Donald is the closest politician in our time to GEN George Washington.

Trump = Washington? I think that's a stretch. Trump = John Adams would be more defensible. Both are successful. Both are pains in the ass, but get things done.

No to John Adams, a Trump would never even come close to saying this:
"Nature, which has established in the universe a chain of being and universal order, descending from archangels to microscopic animalcules, has ordained that no two objects shall be perfectly alike, and no two creatures perfectly equal. Although, among men, all are subject by nature to equal laws of morality, and in society have a right to equal laws for their government, yet no two men are perfectly equal in person, property, understanding, activity, and virtue, or ever can be made so by any power less than that which created them."
Trump thinks people are beneath him and he needs to do it alone!!

MSgt Michael Bischoff - Yeah, a global tycoon that believes he can do it all by himself. Eye roll

MSgt Michael Bischoff - What evidence of that have you? I'm not a fan of the Apprentice but I watched a couple episodes out of curiosity and it appeared to me that the entire premise of the show was about mentoring. Why would a person who has no respect for others ever waste their time mentoring?

I concur with your assessment MAJ Charles Blake. Being an avid student of history I am familiar with what this nation went through and the struggle to do something radical to establish a government. Using citizens to serve in government who would return to their farm, business or military profession after leaving office was the model.
In the 20th Century career politicians and government officials mushroomed when FDR was POTUS and dramatically expanded the Federal government.
I think Donald Trump is closest to Alexander Hamilton among the founding fathers and Presidents James Madison and John Polk since they were not lawyers or soldiers.
Of the early Presidents I think he is closest to John Adams.

LTC Stephen F. - Sir I'm not sure what those last two paragraphs have to do with anything. There has not been a Presidential administration that has not had someone leak or tamper with classified documents. Now the argument could be made, these are the greatest of all? Not quite true when we had the Walker spy ring messing a lot of things up for the Navy. Wasn't that leak going on for 20 years? The FBI Agent Hansen sold his life away and wasn't under these two. I'll admit I could be reading into it too far, but on face value, it looks like well "right now we have the most treasonous" administration in the history of America. Ol Benedict might disagree with that assessment. If I did read it incorrectly bring the hammer down.

SSG Warren Swan - Since the discussion was focused on the founding fathers, I looked for the Presidents who were not lawyers or soldier. Most were lawyers and some were both lawyers and soldiers. James Madison and John Polk were two Presidents who were neither lawyers nor soldiers. Like all Presidents they made good and bad decisions in the limelight of history.
We have had famous traitors such as the Rosenberg's in the early 20th century and Benedict Arnold in the 18th century and many in the Civil War era.
The problem we have had since the 1990s when the internet was released is that it is much easier to access and move information. The Clinton, Bush, and Obama administrations were the ones where monumental leaks became possible and in some cases occurred.
Prior to that it was more difficult to access wide ranges of information and make them available to foreign governments.

MAJ Carl Ballinger - I agree with you, but after 241 years of the same ol, don't you believe it could be high time for a change?
MCPO Roger Collins
Don't president's do that? Not necessarily of their choice. FDR created the need for term limits amendments due to his actions. Now, if only we could take the next step.

MCPO Roger Collins presidents nor senators/congressmen ever leave and return to their normal jobs anymore. Presidents only leave office because they are forced to...

MAJ Charles Blake - Presidents make their wealth as a result of connections, it would be a downward step to return. We have K" Street for Congressmembers that retire by choice or otherwise. Status quo maintained.
