Thinking about reclassing, but can I come back to the line whenever I choose so in the future?

I'm an 11B and I feel like it's time for a change in my career, so I can actually have time to focus with college. I plan to reclass and wonder if it is possible to come back to the line whenever, IF I choose to do so?

If you want to go to an MOS that will give you time to go to college try something you know is a 9:00 to 5:00 job like some jobs I see Air Force soldiers doing at the base I live near..

It sounds like you're not looking for a permanent change of jobs, just a temporary change of scenery that will allow you pursue education. I would say take a look at broadening assignments. Most are 36 months that would allow you to do something different, and pursue college if you want. I was a recruiter, and I can tell you honestly, its worth looking at in your situation. I recruited from 2008-2011 and have been back on the line ever since. I already have a degree, but I had a ton of time to work towards more if I had wanted to. Don't believe everything you've heard about an assignment like that and talk to some people who actually did it, then came back to the line. I think it will give you some other options to consider.

No, you can't come back just because you want to. Reclass is based on the strengths of the MOS. If you're looking for a break from the line, go to recruiting for a while. Right now your branch is taking E5s with only 1 year on station.
The ideal Army career model has Soldiers moving back and forth between the line and TDA assignments. I suggest you get your tab and take an assignment as an RI for a few years. I was able to knock out a lot of college on my off days working in Ranger School.

You are able to reclassify to any mos as long as you are qualified for the Job. However, you must get MOS Q in order to be qualified in that job. Yes you can always go back to a line unit as long as you still are fit for it.

As long as you maintain infantry as a secondary MOS. You will probably have to serve a year in your new MOS. To transfer back to 11b , your current job must be over strength or, in certain cases balanced. 11b must be understrength in your grade/rank. Some people tried this years ago for promotion purposes and it did not work. 11b usually has lower cut off scores vs combat support or support MOSs.

If you reclass, your new MOS will become your PMOS. You will still carry 11B as your SMOS. You can request assignment in your SMOS or you can submit a 4187 to have your PMOS and SMOS swapped, but you’re at the Army’s mercy. They can always say NO.
A broadening assignment sounds more like what you’re looking for.
