Looking only at their service record, it is a toss up for me between Jackson, Roosevelt, and Washington. Looking at the whole person, I'm not a fan of Jacksonian Democracy or Roosevelt's Progressivism, so Washington would take the day there.

EDIT: Sorry, used a term incorrectly. Strike "Jacksonian Democracy", insert "Jackson's policies".

Washington. He was appointed as the General of the Armies by the Continental Congress. While on one hand you could say he was an opportunist, he had a huge challenge of leading a poorly funded largely militia army against the well funded British Army and Mercenaries. Yes, France helped us win independence, but Washington was the one who kept the Colonial Army together, eventually routing a great Britain.

Andrew Jackson because he was just one bad man. He joined the military when he was 13. He defeated the British in the Battle of New Orleans.

It's amazing to look back at the lineage of strong veteran leaders we've had over the years. There's a reason freedom is so treasured today. Never taking that for granted.
