This year I celebrated 29 years of military service. For all you old-timers: How many of you have "out-lived" your peers in the service?

MAJ (Join to see) I raised my hand in 1986 and came in as a PFC 30 years ago, and am distinctly honored to continue my service. My friends are retiring every month with smiles and hopes for the future, but I think I have a few left in me!

Nearly 22 years and counting...8 enlisted, 14 as an officer. My prior enlisted peers from my basic training class are mostly all retired. And after 3 rounds of Force Shaping and SERB boards, there are only a handful of my class mates left from OTS. I feel very fortunate to still have the opportunity to serve in the greatest AF and Military in the world!

I had 32 years. I knew it was time to go as I brought my people home safe for the last time and I was looking towards other horizons. Funny thinking back on it when I started noticing that I was the only one with 'Nam stuff on the rack. I suppose those looking at me wondered if I joined by lying about my age. There was absolutely nobody around me that would have been near 'Nam in '71.

I had instructors that were Vietnam vets in my first NCO school, back in 1993. Indeed a different generation, even era.

I know I have, they retired me the day before my 60th with over 40 years service.

It probably took a couple of MP's to drag you out of unit, First Sergeant! I am undecided whether I will go that long. I have ten years to think about it.

Captain, I think that as long as you feel good and like what you are doing, I don't think you would find a more fulfilling job. Our soldiers need good leadership, esp. now. This world is changing and not for the better. Enjoy what you are doing as long as you want, because there will come a time when you may not. Keep up the good work, Sir.
