I ordered carryout yesterday and the guy at the counter asked me what I wanted to add for a tip. I almost lost it. You messed up my order, caused an excessive wait and did not listen as I told you up front that I was willing to substitute. Was I in the wrong for not tipping or is this just another service that earns their pay in this manner? To tip or not to tip? What is your opinion? 2015-01-31T16:22:22-05:00 CPL Rick Stasny 447198

First, I would like to say that I always tip for services rendered. I sometimes leave the following tip written on the receipt "don't eat the yellow snow". Most wait staff make their living off their tips and if you are complacent and give them tips for bad service everyone suffers. Then I ask to speak to a manager. The manager always want to give you a free desert or something. This always irritates me. I just say, I'm not complaining because I want something for free, I am telling you what is wrong so that you might fix it (and if serious enough I add that we won't be back). However if something is that messed up I don't tip at all. Otherwise we are big tippers. I waited tables myself and its a tough job. It's a draconian practice and especially cruel to have people's financial well-being dependent upon the whims of others. Excellent service should be expected, and those who fail to provide it should face termination, but those who do should be assured a steady source of income. I hope that you complained to the Management otherwise the server will always continue piss-poor service if that is their rhythm.

Depending on the restaurant, some servers get assigned to the carryout station for an entire shift. Tipping the carryout servers is just like those waiting tables. They are running around preparing the food to go. They are solely responsible for making sure the carryout orders are correct and complete.

Now, if they goofed up those orders that is typically their only mission that shift, then I would be hard-pressed to justify tipping generously. A tip should be for excellent service. An incentive to do a great job, not the primary source of income. I have witnessed large parties with hundreds of dollars on the bill give less than $5 as a tip. Not because of bad service but because the payer thought that the waitress should get a better job if she wants to get a better check. He felt she was beneath him.
Even worse than bad tippers are managers that force their employees to split tips. If the tips are split the waiter or waitress that screws up your order, let's your drink run out, and only comes to the table when you call him/her gets the same as the one that goes above and beyond. Unfairness disguised as fairness, but done only to ensure the boss doesn't have to pay. Everyone can have a bad day. The manager/owner needs to mentor and coach the ones that struggle. If they continue to get bad tips for bad service, let them go.
