Today on FB "Army Senior Warrant Officer" posted the following:

"in Accordance to DA-Pam 670-1 dated July 2015, Senior Field Grade Warrants (CW3-CW5) will wear the Field Grade cap with two arc of oak leaves." Okay I am a National Guard M-Day WO, what cataclysmic change occurred, that said that WO's are now Field Grade? Or is this some sort of joke and I missed it? When I read the paragraph DA Pam 670-1 I don't see that mentioned. Is there a letter coming out?

In the new Army Command Policy, AR 600-20, it distinguishes the ranks and where they stand. This is for evaluations, housing, duty rosters, uniform, etc.

There us an official update clarifying CW3 and CW4 are now "Field Grade" Officers. CW5 is a "Senior Field Grade" Officer. It has helped a lot with Housing commendations with Active Duty. I would have to do some dogging to see where the official changes were made. But with all of this, they don't want Warrants thinking that they area on the same level as other Field Grades.

AR 600-20, Army Command Policy, chapter 1 para 1-6 (chart- table 1-1) identifies CW3/CW4 as Field Grade Warrants.

If you look closely there is a difference in the two sections of DA PAM 670-1 (DEC14 vs JUL15) – “Warrant Officer” has been removed following “Company Grade Officers” in the July 15 version. This means you are authorized wear of the service cap corresponding to your rank (e.g. WO1-CW2 – Company Grade and CW3-CW5 – Field Grade). Please remember that the service cap is an optional uniform item.

CW3 and above have been considered Field Grade equivlant since I can remember. I retired in 1998. When I went to Bosnia, in 1995, everyone lived in reinforced tents, I moved into one, and was told I had to move into a two man trailer. My roomy was a LTC. They said that all field grade officers had to stay in the trailers. Hey I was fine with that. The LTC PCSd back to the US and I used the trailer in the day to house our night shift folks, so they could sleep uninterupted. Anyway thought I would share.

To address your question of "Field Grade Warrant Officers," I retired in 2013 and I kind of think that things have not changed that much. If you can go to the housing office and read that Senior Warrant Officers are authorized "field grade" housing and there are many other regulations that refer to senior warrant officers as having "field grade privilege." If you look at the way warrant officers become "Regular Army" at CW3 and O-grade officers are at Major, and how junior grade officers OER's are NOT blocked until Major or CW3, this would indicate that "Senior Warrant Officers shake out as Field Grade Officers." Those officers and warrant officers in the rank of 2LT-CPT, W1-W2 as junior officers. As for the change to the 670-1, the only change is that Warrant Officers and O-Grade officers will wear the eagle on their dress hat and their appropriate branch. This is a subject that is near to my heart as during my years a warrant officer I had to stand up for "field grade privileges" and remind my O-grade brethren that even though Warrant Officers, "technically out ranked by the youngest 2LT," serve many years in a primary military occupation, many times backing up that Senior Officer, so that that officer can concentrate on his or her primary duties as Commander. We are that "Subject Matter Expert" (SME) that all run too to get the job done, weather or not it is in our specialty. Many times Senior Warrant Officers are over looked for those privileges which are in the grey because they are not spelled out. I have seen CW5's flying to Kuwait in the rear of the plane and Sergeant Major's in 1st class, how is this right.

To all of you who responded to this, thanks. The big thing is finding out on FB and not through official channels out in the netherworld of being a traditional Weekend Warrior. Finding uniform items for WO's at the local National Guard Shack referred to as AAFES is at best challenging. I had heard for years it was "in the works," but to actually see it passed, is something else.
