Transition to Officer

I'm about to get out of the Navy this fall and go to school. I was wondering, if me having prior enlisted service effect me trying to serve as an officer after I get my degree? Would it be difficult? Or does it matter? Thanks.

From an an administrative/ regulatory stand point, I wouldn't expect any adverse impacts. In many respects, the experience you've had should benefit you, even if you go into a field completely different than what you did while enlisted. That being said, as with everything else in the military, your success as an officer will largely be personality driven, and based on how you handle the issues that occur under your watch.

If you remember the enlisted community where you came from I believe you are a better leader in the officer corps. Seeing the world through both lenses is more valuable than many can imagine.

My viewpoint is as a Navy LDO who was a Chief the day before I was an Ensign. I never lost sight of where I came from. Firm but fair...

You're actually ahead by having prior enlisted experience, as you will be more respected as an officer for your prior experience. Before you get out, talk to your ascension NCO/officer or a recruiter and they can help you define the requirements and milestones.
