I've been honorabley discharged for 50 years from the US Army, can I still get dental benefits from the Army. PFC Michael A. Brown, served in Panama CZ from April 1972 to October 1973 and Fort Sill, OK from October 1973 to 1974.

With as important as Dental Health is to the overall heath of our bodies, is there a reason that the VA doesn't provide some basic Dental coverage to all Vets? I am not talking free for everyone, but a low cost basic dental plan that helps meet basic needs and some emergencies.

What coverage can we get if we’ve served from 1979 - 1985 and have been honorably discharged. When we enlisted we were promised life time health and most of us thought that was dental as well. Well, as it seems we were the first in the cancel anything movement as we are now Cancel Veterans.

I have Delta Dental and they only cover 1/2 of a dental implant. One Implant costs $5,000. They only cover $2,500. Can I get one on -base or some other way to defray the cost??

My brother is a USN veteran. He has VA benefits because he has no other health coverage. He has no approved VA disability; however, after a near-fatal car accident, Social Security approved his claim without receiving the nearly standard denial. Medicare provides no dental benefits. He lost a couple of teeth and cracked another during the accident. He has a TBI with cognitive complications. He broke bones in every part of his body except his left arm. Some bones I had not seen named since college anatomy. From early February to mid-June of 2019, my brother was in the ICU, a rehab center, and a VA intense rehab program.

At one point, the VA doctor declared him catastrophically disabled. The staff told him that designation made him eligible for dental coverage through the VA. Since his discharge, the local clinic does not look at anything and tells him he is not eligible for VA dental. The VA provides his glasses and hearing aids.

Is there any way to address his dental issues before they begin to impact his health negatively? Is there a low-cost plan available to veterans in similar situations?

Thank you for addressing these issues. Dental coverage seems to be quite elusive for low-income veterans and veterans with disabilities.

I have a 20% disability rating for hearing loss and tinnitus, I also don't qualify for cosmetic dentistry but can I get dental surgery for a molar below or at the gum line that has rotted?

I was medically retired in 2014, why isn’t any kind of dental offered to retirees when they retire, the only ones who are offered any dental post military are those who have a dental (oral) related injuries and even then to get a VA rating that covers any kind of dental is very hard. Are there any plans to change this so veterans and retirees will be given dental care that is covered by the VA regardless of rating or service connection

Coming out of the military most have an idea about their medical needs but haven't a clue about dental needs. I was fortunate to get dental coverage through my post military job and when looking at coverage my dentists staff said it was exceptional. But honestly I just took what was offered. I'm a 100% disabled Veteran and get dental work at the Santa Rosa VA, but my dentist there has refused to cap my 3 front bottom front teeth that have been ground down to unsightly stubs do to the porcelain caps on the top front teeth. He has also has refused to put either bridges or implants where two molars where removed in the back top, he said to just chew with my other teeth. Now private dentists are willing to take care of these issues without hesitation but it will cost a pretty good amount of money and I don't have outside coverage. My question is, is there someone I can talk two about this dentist and his low-quality substandard care.

FIRST OF ALL, my rank was SGT when I was honorably discharged in 1973, NOT SrA! Unfortunately, I have a doctors appointment on the 18th and will not be able to attend this meeting. It would be most appreciated if someone could contact me via email with an answer to my questions below.

Due to a fall of 17' to a concrete floor while on active duty and with little documentation in my medical records, I have been unable to obtain anything more than a 10% service-connected disability (for my wrist). Fortunately, I was able to get 100% NON service-connected disability, but still do not have access to dental. Just about every dental plan I've looked into is either too costly or not accepted by a majority of dentists.

The last time I had teeth removed, something went disastrously wrong whereby I cannot brush my teeth due to much pain and I SERIOUSLY need the remaining 13 removed (3 are below gum line and 1 is nearing that point). Since I've had a heart attack and atrial fib, I'm told being totally sedated is not an option. Hence another problem, I was threatened with a hypodermic at the age of 3 and still suffer a form of PTSD, even with bloodwork and especially watching shots being given for COVID, on TV! Even with the use of nitrous oxide, I have difficulty with ANY dental procedure. I am now 72 and have neglected my teeth for over 10 years due to my last experience. Any suggestions on how I might handle this and what, if any, insurance would cover a majority of this work, at the most REASONABLE RATE, including dentures (I am asking about the most comprehensive plan, with the most coverage at the LEAST EXPENSE, as I have been FORCEFULLY RETIRED SINCE AGE 36 due to back surgery and have a severely limited income)?

This is a great opportunity for the transition period especially when you turn 65. I’ve found my biggest question period was going on Medicare and how it plays with TRICARE for life.

Recommend a follow on seminar for that future bump in the road.

We have a Marine vet who sent this problem to our detachment Facebook page and we don't have an answer for him.
"...lOO percent service connected need to have a Dentist knows how to put in G4implants for free because they don't have one works for a Veteran Medical Centers Dentistry or don't have a contract with the Veteran Affairs Administration and if a Disabled Veterans who is lOO percent service connected don't get the G4implants it definitely cause really bad Swallowing Problems plus really bad Gum Disease also it really bad Hearts Problems."
The problem seems to be lack of qualified dental expertise at VA centers or contracted to them. What do we answer to him?

I have not had a good experience with the VA Dental service in Pittsburgh. The one dentist screwed up a root canal that caused an infection and a 2 bout of high white blood count and vertigo. A few years later a different dentist took 3 times to get a root canal right, he didn't get all the way to the bottom twice before another one took over. Then a few more years later and I needed a tooth pulled and he pulled the wrong tooth which meant I had to go back the next week to get the right one pulled. I can't go near the place without my blood pressure going through the roof. If there's outside services to get let me know. I used the Community Service office for outside chiropractic care for a number of years but as soon as the Pittsburgh VA got a staff chiropractor, he wanted everyone to go to the Pittsburgh hospital for a 10 minute treatment. I had to drive an hour each way for that 10 minutes. So if the the VA is going to offer outside Dental coverage make sure there isn't a distance from facility clause that makes it unfeasible to use. We served, we earned a little consideration.

I start Medicare next month and I have ChampVA. ChampVA tells me I am better off with them, not to get a medicare advantage plan or supplemental plan. I've been told about a free advantage plan for veteran spouses that includes dental, hearing and vision. ChampVA does not offer any of these. I was going to pay for a separate dental plan, not in an advantage plan until I heard about this free one. I trust ChampVA, but free is enticing! What am I missing, what should I do?

If I can get VA coverage at 0% disability because of my income level, why can't I get dental coverage as well? My teeth are literally rotting in my mouth because I can't afford to go to the dentist, and I have other health problems from not being able to eat a large variety of foods or chew them properly, along with mental health issues from this.

"Delta Dental experts ..."..??? I've had two different DAV representatives tell me that I cannot claim service-related dental damage. My two top-front teeth were broken while I was in AIT at Ft. Polk, Louisiana. I'm one of many veterans whose medical (and many other) records are missing or possibly have been lost. Regarding dental "care", the VA gave me options for dental extractions ... not other treatments. So do you experts have information about dental "benefits" that even the DAV folks don't know about? I'm 75 and have struggled with trying to file claims since 1969 (one year after my Army discharge). Dental is a big deal, but truly only a facet of my legitimate claims. Is there new info about "dental benefits" that you can share?

How do I change my honorable discharge to medical retirement? What forms do I need? Where do I submit them? I received my honorable discharge after serving 17 years on active duty in the US Army. My ETS was 1994.
I have been diagnosed with PTSD (Post Traumatic Distress Disorder) from MST (Military Sexual Trauma), suffer from anxiety, & depression. I have been unable to secure long term employment since 2012.

In addition, I had blast exposure from a military injury. I have hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing of my left ear) & must wear bilateral hearing aids. To include dealing with TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). I am rated by the VA as 100% disabled with P&T (Permanent & Total) with IU (Individual Unemployability) since everything was all service connected. Your suggestions, advice, & guidance are sincerely appreciated. Thank you.

I would just like to see when dental treatment is just as important as medical. The whole Gut G.I. Tract is so important to health. We talk about immune and Covid-19. I got cancer and my immune system was struggling all that over processed food. Good dental hygiene. Organics and avoiding sugar is key!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Dental health is physical health.

Dental coverage for overseas Veterans, what is that? Surely you joke. We barely get coverage for specific disabilities, no travel pay, and little to none of the coverage and benefits we would receive in the states. At 100% disabled you still only get specific benefits and claim exams covered, pay your way to Bangkok. We couldn't even get Covid vaccine from the VA.

In my service time, 1973-1976, I had several teeth removed by the Army Dentists. Because of that, in 1977 all my dental needs were taken care of by the VA. Smoking ended up causing me more problems with my teeth, and am still dealing with this now, even though I quit smoking in 2003. I am not letting the VA have anything to do with my teeth. My dentist, knows what I need and I am not letting anyone else have anything to do with it. Implants are good replacements. They work better than Root Canals and Crowns. A lot more costly, but chewing is much improved.

I'm a Retired Veteran and as of today, I'm still not allowed to use my VA Benefits I earned. Due to the fact the VA say's My family makes too much $$$ monthly. But if I was to get a Divorce I would qualify for Benefits since my wife's income would not count towards my annual income. This is one thing the Government and VA does not tell it's Soldier's, Sailor's, Marines, Coast Guard and Air Force enlistee's when they enlist. But now as of this month I have been given a Rating of 0% Disability on my Hearing loss and can seek Hearing Aid help through the VA. Also in the process of appealing the 0% Rating, due to the fact my hearing has gotten worse and I have worn hearing Aids for the past 9 years in order to hear.

The Air Force and the VA screwed me out of dental care when I retired, was Cat III, not worldwide deployable, and needed a bunch of care at retirement. I wasn't planning on retiring but had a heart attack and was still recovering when I put in for retirement.

Was told at my last-minute TAPS briefing that because of my dental work that was needed that my DD214 would be annotated as not having required dental care before discharge and the VA would take care of it. What wasn't said, was that I only had 90 days to file for and get said dental care.

Now the thing that pisses me off is I have read multiple articles on Military Times where men/women can get sex change operations paid for by the VA, for mental health reasons, but they don't have the same 90 day requirement to make up their minds and get the care taken care of by the VA.

So here I am 10 years after retirement, have lost 12 of my teeth, another 8 getting ready to fall out, my PTSD and Major Depression and medication killing my teeth but yet I can't get dental care (I've asked dozens of times) even though it SERIOUSLY affects my MENTAL HEALTH!!!

But no one cares, no one can do anything...and I"m left to rot....thank you to the VA for screwing me over, I don't care anymore.

I had denture and other dental work performed by the Air Force in 1973. I still require dental services. The VA says I am no longer qualify for dental care, unless I have a 100% disability. I have a 40% service connected disability. and I am unemployed. How can you you help and support me on this quest? Ernesto Santiago Clarke, E-4, USAF Vietnam Era Veteran.

What free dental coverage is allowed to veterans 70-100% disability IU/P&T.

Are we allowed 6 month's cleaning/check-ups

How does a veterans with above sign up to receive these benefits and is it out patient, meaning outside of the VA hospital if not close enough for regular visits.

good morning..I have neen out since 1977, spent 6 months in vietnam, but cannot prove it, us air force, e 4, 27 jan 1974 to 17 aug 1977, an us civil service sept 1977 to dec 1978, president carter reduced all forces, but anyway Aspen dental pulled all my theeth, gave me dentures after 7 time of reallignment do not fit I need implants but can t aford , $50.000 dollars

I was medically discharged in 2005 after 9 years on active duty. I have a 90% rating from the VA. Recently, my discharge status was reviewed, and I was retroactively retired to 2005. It's still being processed, so I don't even have my retiree ID card yet. Is there dental coverage available to me and my dependants?

I cn understand that those who have been classfied with 100% service connected disability deserve to get ANY medical services available; but I cn't fathom why there is absolutely no point at which veterans, especially those who served during wartime don't deserve some consideration. Mny of us experienced traumas since being discharged that drove us to point of self-medication (substance abuse: alcohol and/or narcotics addiction) that has seriously affected our dental health.

Whether thru trauma or substance abuse, as we age, our dental health becomes seriously detrimental to our physical health (cardiological, glycemic). We look forward to Medicare eligibility so we cn get dental care we couldn't afford in our younger yrs, but we find there are also limitations in care we cn get in our twilight yrs. Are veteran doomed to inferior all-around care same as civilians?

I HAVE 23 YEAR and retired from the guards .I am 40% disabled . I was told when I am old enough I will lose my disability and than get the retirement Now If I was 50% I would get both .I have 4 years to get this straight .And is it true When I get start to get SSI I will lose what I make from my pension . ///called double dipping???So would it just be better to not to get the pension and just say with the disability

As vets, we need to work to see that EVERYONE in this country gets full single-payer dental, eye care, health, education. Housing. If EVERYONE has it, that will include us. The only “paperwork” or “service” anyone should provide is to walk in as a living human. Did we serve so ONLY we should get this care? We served the people - and now we’re the people, too.

In 1967 while I was at Fort Dix For AIT Training I had cavities, They did not fill them but pulled three teeth that I though could have saved. Ive always been bothers about this.

I was told that I do not have any benefits for dental coverage since I did not have a service related issue. The only thing I had done was having my wisdom teeth removed last one after I left the service which the military did cover. DD214 Honorable Discharge Aug 1974.

I retired after 23 years service in the Army. I have Medicare Part A and Part B, and TRICARE for Life. Currently I pay out of pocket monthly for a Delta Dental policy for myself and my wife. She is also a retired Army officer with Medicare A and B and TRICARE for Life.

What are our options? Is there federal/ or military dental coverage available?

I saw that this question was kind of already asked but I just have to say. As a person with heart issues that is part of my disability rating from the Army, why is dental not covered? I mean bad teeth equals more heart problems so...

As a retired officer (enlisted too), I signed a document upon separation that stated that I was subject to recall to active duty. One stipulation to that recall would be in what qualifies one to be recalled. It was found after the Civil War (and never rescinded) that a soldier must have a minimum of 4 teeth that oppose each other so that they can eat and chew food. Without dental care or periodic dental inspections, how does the government and military know that as a component of the inactive reserve, you are actually qualified for recall? This service should be in conjunction with Tricare standard and Tricare for life at no cost to the member.

My disability rating is 70%, right now my only income is my disability. I've been looking at different dental plans that I can afford that will give me the coverage that I need. Delta Dental has plans with the ACA, Medicaid and the VA. They're all over the place with coverage and costs. I could use some guidance please.

Community Care in rural areas is difficult to access. They only accept one doctor and not the system like for Arbor Health. Doctors may rotate in and then the process has to start again. Delta Dental is problematic too. The dentist has to check with the VA, Delta Dental and TriCare be for rendering service. Then most times I have to drive 2 hours to a VA facility to get a second opinion.

I have never been one to go to the doctor. After 8 years in active duty, the doctors were surprised that my records were so thin compared to the masses. Years after separating, I was diagnosed with rheumatoid/osteo arthritis and later prostate cancer. During my military service, I was exposed to many hazardous chemicals and possibly others during my deployment to Kuwait for Operation Southern Watch. I've been employed as IT in an office environment since becoming a civilian and my rheumatologist even agreed that more than likely my RA was due to an exposure I encountered during military service. The VA declined my claim and my rheumatologist (a veteran himself) wouldn't go on record to provide a letter to aid my claim. VA declined because there wasn't any evidence linking to my military service. I usually wouldn't care but my rheumatologist is a private doctor so the office visits and medications are costly and being 52, I have no option but to forget retirement and continue working to ensure my mortgage & bills get paid. Is there anything else I can try?

For Military Medicare-eligible military retirees, what are the costs and benefits of selecting TRICARE For Life (TFL), as opposed to enrolling in a Medicare Advantage plan or Part C, for their health care needs. Granted TFL is no cost to the Medicare-eligible military retiree, but only covers the medical costs Medicare doesn't cover, and has a low co-pay or no-pay drug plan, or Part D benefit. Thank you.

Why does the VA refuse to acknowledge the effects of Agent Orange that I have been suffering with for 50+ years? I've met dozens of vets with the same problem. I asked a Captain at the VA hospital about his 100% disability. He said all Vietnam vets are 100% disabled do to Agent Orange. i can only guess that only CO's, who may have spent the year in an airconditioned office in Saigon, are eligible. i read in a medical magazine that a Dr. at Maguire VA hospital discovered the connection in the early 70's. She was fired and the there was a fire at the records warehouse in St Louis that burned up only the Vietnam records. Coincidence?
