Trending Influencers -- where do they get all their points?

So, as I am reading through various posts, there is a column on the right hand side that says "trending influencers" who have an amazingly high amount of influence points, especially "recent" points (although I don't know what RP considers recent).

My question is, how are they gaining these points? Are the asking the extremely thought provoking questions? Are they voting up every post they see? Providing great feedback or just saying "yes or I agree"?

Not knocking anyone, just curious.

Recent is 72 hours.

The "points", which really don't matter, are "earned" from asking questions, up voting other, responding to questions, making new contacts, being up voted by others, bonuses for various badges, etc.

Up votes are limited to 75 per day.

LTC Private RallyPoint Member, click on the down arrow near your name in the upper right corner, then click on Leaderboard. Then click on the down arrow adjacent to View My Influence Score Details. This will show you the value of the various activities.

Trending Influencers looks at the last 72 hours, as mentioned by TSgt Joshua Copeland. It updates every 15 minutes.

RallyPoint promotes the concepts of 1) meritocracy (best voted answers rise to the top) and 2) transparency. Anybody can see where everybody else's points come from... there's no back room deals . To see your own points board, go to https://www.rallypoint.com/influence and click on "View my influence points details" to see expand the whole board.

You can also see the same board for others, by first going to their profile on desktop, and then clicking on their score near the top of their profile. Then click on "View Influence Points Details" to expand. Everything is right there.

As TSgt Joshua Copeland also mentioned, you can also see a breakdown of recent point activity on their profile under "Recent Activity", although this part can be hidden through the privacy setting.

Lastly, here is a power user tip... you can see a list of all the Trending Influencers (not just the top 5) by clicking on Trending Influencers widget title or "See more" at the bottom. It takes you here: https://www.rallypoint.com/influence?type=trending#my-influence-summary

What do high point scores mean to me? Or, why should they mean anything to me? If I have high influencer points, does it make me important?

I have wondered the same thing. The way I see it, is they give you rewards for whatever to keep you coming back. Myself, I come back to talk to people who have something in common with me. We may have different opinions on topics, but one thing most of us have, is we offered our lives for this country, and many of us would do it again in a second. We are brothers and sisters in a family that only veterans are apart of. The time I spend sharing with my military family is far greater than any point system.

To be honest, this is the first time I've really paid any attention to it. The points I got and a couple buck will buy me a cup of coffee. I say what I think and that's about it.

I got mine through correspondence courses. I also heard you can get tabs, like Special Forces, Airborne, Ranger, etc through correspondence courses.

Overall pretty worth it, I feel.

While there are some to whom influence points matter, I think there are many here who participate at their own level and speed - commenting where they believe they can make a difference, reading where they believe they can learn something, & scanning topics to scrutinize how they want to participate. There is no one right or wrong answer.

As more members become familiar with you and the discussion you comment on you will begin to 'reap the influence benefits' by way of up votes and additional comments that sometimes have a snowball effect on the numbers. All-in-all this site is just a bunch obtuse functioning family members having conversations all over the map ..... but learning something in the process.

For me I can care less about the points, I truly enjoy the threads and conversations with folks on here. Some of the questions are thought provoking, others light hearted. I will vote up a comment I like or think is funny. Especially the funny ones and there have been a lot of them on here.

Sir, I really think about what I post most of the time, and have already learned a great deal from people of all ranks. I never think about points and was shocked when I realized how many I had. I wish I could give you a more precise answer.
