Texas Troops to Teachers

On August 26, an interpretation discrepancy between the legislation and current draft policies regarding financial assistance eligibility was brought to our attention by OSD. This relates to the three year registration requirement for any member who becomes entitled to retired or retainer pay vs registration requirement of someone who has been transferred to the Retired Reserve.

Here is a link to a recent story on the Troops to Teachers Program in the Fayetteville/Fort Bragg, NC area. I participated in Troops to Teachers in Minnesota, the program varies in strength from one state to another, but it is present in all 50. Between Troops to Teachers and my Post 9/11 GI Bill, I essentially made money by going and completing my Masters in Special Education at the University of Minnesota.

For those who are on the fence about a post-retirement career in education, look into it! Even up here in semi-Socialist Minnesota, I have found that districts are eager to hire Veterans because of the real-world perspectives the can bring to the classroom, as well as for their maturity and professionalism. In addition, many districts will give preference points to hiring Veterans. Students find it exciting to know that their teacher has actually led an interesting an adventurous life before stepping to the head of the classroom, and the aspects and details you can bring to the table from your military career can lend authenticity to your lessons.

The highest demands in the profession currently are for the areas of math, science, technology, and special education; however, there is currently a large trend of retiring Boomers, so there are jobs in pretty much any concentration.

By all means, look into it!

I went through the program and received my teacher license in Virginia and West Virginia. It’s a great program.

I heard of the program. You should be able to get information at VA center.
