Unit Circled No on AAA report for me to go to the Promotion Board without counseling me. Can they do this?

So on 10 Nov my unit said that I won't be able to go to promotion board because they don't think I am ready. I asked if they were going to counsel me on why so I can fix the deficiency so I can go next month and they stated they don't have to do a formal counselling since i'm not in my primary zone. What should I do. Brought it to my 1SG attention and he didnt really seem to care. He has been on leave as well. Its crazy cuz most of the time you have to force people to go and I am willing to take on more responsibility and further my career.

The commander only has to counsel you for non-recommendation if you are in the primary zone.
Regardless, if they don't feel that you are ready, they should tell you why, but it's usually something that takes longer than 30 days to fix.

I feel like there's more to this story.
According to your profile, you are a SPC with about 4 years 4 months in service, but you are wearing SGT rank in your profile pic...

Since you are not in your primary zone counseling isn't required by regulation. That doesn't mean you can't be counseled. Don't get wrapped around the axle on formal counseling, just talk to your PSG about it. If you feel that strongly about formal counseling then use the open door policy and talk to the commander, he has to sign the AAA. If that doesn't work you can call IG, but since counseling isn't required they wont do much because command isnt violating regs.

Your unit does not have to send you to the promotion board until you are in your primary Zone. You are eligible with a waiver to attend earlier. You simply were not given a waiver, your leadership does not have to counsel you on why they did not give you a waiver.

Now, if you enter your primary Zone and your leadership does not allow you to attend the promotion board, then you have a valid Inspector General complaint. Once you are in your primary Zone, your leadership must send you to the board, and does not have the option of Simply circling no

Just a short reply from someone that knows about UCMJ repercussions: Once you get spanked your COC can evaluate your performance much more strictly as for recovering your stripes. In my day many who lost just one stripe got told to hit the sidewalk and this was in Division. Depending upon how/why you were reduced it could be some time before your unit thinks its a good idea to make you an NCO again. Persistence and demonstration of how you learned from your mistakes go a long way.

Ok, so six months ago you were deemed unsuitable to wear NCO stripes and now you are wondering if your commander “can” do something? At some point in the past someone thought you were worthy of wearing stripes. You had that privilege removed and now suddenly six months later you feel entitled to get them back?
You don’t seem to even have learned your lesson from having them taken away. Your actions were the reason they were taken away, nobody else did anything to you. You lost the trust in your patriotism, fidelity, valor, and demonstrated leadership potential that earned them. Am NCO would have already known that he didn’t need to be counseled for non selection for promotion when he is not in the primary zone.

Be honored you were considered, and keep up the work that earned it. You first line leader should be able to ferret out any shortcomings through COC. They always put an entry in SRB of Marine for any local Board, whether selected/promoted or not. It highlights your performance to future leaders.
