United States Armed Forces Oath of Enlistment! What year did you take it?

"I, (state name of enlistee), do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; and that I will obey the orders of the President of the United States and the orders of the officers appointed over me, according to regulations and the Uniform Code of Military Justice. So help me God."

I took this Oath in May of 1968, at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard and it still stands strong today and it does not have an expiration date. Do you remember when you took yours?

11/10/1953 Boston MA & it was also my 18th Birthday. The Marine Recruiters thought this was great that I enlisted on my birthday which as you know is the birthday of the Marines. So they fitted me in Dress Blues and took my picture which was in the local newspapers ....They used me for recruiting I guess?? They said I should select Sea School or Embassy Duty at Parris Island SC which was just spin because you go where the Marines want you to go...I ended up in the Infantry..

In 1986 I swore to this oath. In 1989 I also swore when I reup'd for 4 years. In 1992 I reup'd again - we had went to Desert Storm/Shield, I swore the to serve another 5 years. In 1996 I swore to support and defend for an indefinite period of time - this was shortly after we returned from Bosnia, I would serve for as long as my country needed me.

I think the current concept is valid, although I think we need to maintain a larger force in today's environment. That said, I think the Air Force needs needs to be held to their charter, or pass on their responsibility for CAS to the Army. We need a dedicated CAS platform like the A-10, not a fighter that can only very marginally perform the role.

We say that: “my oath doesn’t have an expiration date.. what if after a person’s enlistment they were held to that ? That would mean that forever.... you were held in tow by the U.C.M.J. ? And you know what that means.., technically (imho) you could be held in contempt for berating the mayor or some other official in government, not just the leaders in upper government.. You may not have voted for waters or nadler but you wouldn’t be allowed to badmouth about them... think about that ! Imagine you and a close associate have a big difference of opinion,

Enough up and this former associate says give me $1,500 and I’ll keep my mouth shut... They’re willing to swear on a bible
You said s’thing contemptuous and know of other friends of yours they could call as hostile witness(es) because they know s’thing of your political beliefs and biases..

It could happen, so you’d need to know who your friends are.. I’m all. For believing my oath doesn’t expire.. and I suppose I would just hope I didn’t slip and say or write something contemptuous
about a person high up in government that I could be held liable for.

June of 1961,before I actually graduated from High School. I had 5 weeks of Basic at Leonard Wood, lived in barracks that had not been used since WW2, no AIT & went straight to Ft Riley to the 13th Infantry where we learned OJT. to be Straight leg Infantry. It was the time of the Cuban Missle Crisis. We packed our bags & put them on a truck every night, in preparation to go down to Florida

Lets see...July 71 when I first entered the Air Force, then July of 76 when I reenlisted after a year extension, then in 79 when I reenlisted early to get a Long Overseas Tour to the Phillippines, then again in 83, then in 86 because I caught a Remote Assignment to Alaska with a guarenteed follow on Assignment (which got cancelled), and then in 1990 for the last time. Retired in 94.

I took this oath in Feb 1982 and it has never been lost on me. Since taking this oath, i have studied our framers and our US Constitution to put context and understanding to what i am pledging to defend. It is not an allegiance to our government, but an allegiance to defend the principles enshrined within our constitution which helps secure liberty for Americans.

I swore this oath many times throughout my military career. I graduated high-school at the end of my sophomore year in 1976 went down to the recruiting office, tested, went through the physical, signed the paperwork and took my oath. The my mother found out and brought it the attention of the enduction station, oops, a year and a half later I took it again, by this time I didn't need parental approval. Nearly 23 years later I retired from service.
