If it's an older gentleman who's been out a LONG time, then "bc I'm young, or female, or don't look crazy" is probably as good of a reason as you're going to get. Part of it is my appearance (beard, longer hair, clothing, and for some reason tattoos throw them off too). Part of it has something to do with my choice of music (I'm a Deadhead and Phish phan). Part of it has to do with the fact that I'm a teacher with a master's degree and some (very little at this point) post graduate work.

All of this flies in the face of the "traditional" veteran (except maybe the tattoos). For the first ten or fifteen years of my career, people always thought I was too young for this or that. Sometimes I felt that looking so young cramped my style and made others treat me like a lightweight.

I like Sgt Fulgham - Blais's advice: Let those comments roll off. Time will march on, and there will come a day when you will long for the good old days when everybody was telling you you looked too young to be a veteran.

Two related posts:

https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/how-old-do-you-picture-yourself-to-be

https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/i-d-like-to-get-an-idea-of-the-age-of-folks-who-are-active-on-rallypoint-how-old-are-you

Not exactly accurate so maybe I need to edit my vision of myself! Do you often see yourself as being part of one group or identifying with a certain age or...

I think that maybe the role of the female veteran has grown exponentially based on the attention from the GWoT. Now, more than ever, women are being put in harm's way. As a result, you're probably going to see more women at the VA hospital. I would imagine that those who look at you and are surprised that you're a vet are those cantankerous old fats (God love them) from the previous conflicts. Notably from WWII-Vietnam, who haven't really interacted with women in an operations setting. I think as time goes by, veterans will be identified without regard to appearance, gender or service. Of course, that is my opinion.Response by SSgt Charles Edwards made Jun 9 at 2015 2:07 PM2015-06-09T14:07:12-04:002015-06-09T14:07:12-04:00SGT Private RallyPoint Member736280
