Cpl. Bill West:
He and I graduated from PI together, went on to ITR, Tank school, and on to 1st Tanks in RVN. We suffered a TDY to ASP#1, ran patrols, OP and bridge duty and eventually posted to Gun Companies. He to Alpha tanks and me to Charlie. We would get together on my few runs back to Bn. On meeting each other once we both said "Hey, you're supposed to be dead!" Scuttlebutt ran rampant when ever the SHTF.

On a reaction run to aid an over run position, Bill's tank pulled up to the gate and immediately was hit by RPGs killing two of the crew and wounding him. The RPG went over his shoulder, as driver, and entered the turret blowing off his helmet and bits of his shoulder and neck. He dropped his seat, popped back up and emptied his .45 at the gooks on the hill and then went out the escape hatch. He and the other crew man hid under the tank for some hours, armed only with two .45s and about 20 rounds until rescued, come daylight. He was medevac'd to Japan and as promised, returned to complete his tour.

He was a hell of a friend and Marine. Thanks to all on RP for your help and comments.
