As a Veteran, i am able to connect with fellow Veteran patients in hospice care in a unique way that nurses, cate givers, and even family members are not. Some Veterans harbor deep emotional scars from their service(especially Vietnam Veterans) that they have refused to share or talk about. When they see or acknowledge that i also a Veteran, they start to share and talk about their military service. There are few who feel hopeless and shame because of the the things they have done or didn’t do. As they share their experiences with me, I ensure they know that i do not judge them foe their actions/inaction’s and that our our country, fellow Veterans, and I will forever be grateful for their service to our country. If they are religious, i will pray with them so they can make their peace with God and asked then to save a drink for me when I join them on the other side.
As a volunteer, i am also a bridge between the military and family members sharing a side of the Veteran family members never knew about. As such, i have often been invited to attend end of life services where I dutifully give the deceased Veteran his/her final salute. Words can not describe how much this simple gesture of respect means the Veteran’s family and friends. I strongly encourage all my fellow Veterans to volunteer to meet with our fellow brothers and sisters in arms in hospice care. But that was a long, long time ago. Now as a fully retired veteran of 78, I am a volunteer with a hospice organization, providing friendly visits to fellow veterans who are under the care of the hospice. I didn't do a lot of that work after getting married and raising two daughters. But during the last two years of my employment, I started to take horticultural course at the community college, Morton Arboretum and Chicago Botanical Garden. When I retired, I worked with a garden designer until I developed Crohn's Disease and couldn't endure the heat any longer. When I moved back to Virginia, I enrolled into the Virginia Master Gardener Program, took a job as an Executive Coordinator of a group that volunteers to pick up roadside trash, and I completed several programs in environmental education. As a Master Gardener, I was assigned to an Elementary School and worked with grades 4 and 5 in planting school gardens--flower and vegetable and installed a blue and nature trail and rain garden. Together with the work that I did with the JAYCEES and church, I feel that I gave my few talents to the community, and it gave me a great deal of satisfaction. A secondary objective, with their permission, is to donate a copy to their local library/museum, the local state university, the National WWII Museum (if a WWII vet) and the Library of Congress. I recently started a channel to upload these interviews for the public to view: bit.ly/rememberandhonorstories Response by Brad Hoopes made Apr 4 at 2022 4:24 PM 2022-04-04T16:24:46-04:00 2022-04-04T16:24:46-04:00 Cpl Frank Lahtinen 7608014

If you are in Colorado and looking for volunteer, opportunities please come work with us.
Operation Veteran Strong.org is looking for community champions to raise awareness of this platform.
Veterans that have connected with us are making a difference in their communities. Since holding office as a NH State Representative, I have gotten several good pieces of veteran friendly legislation passed to help other vets. Two years ago I authored a bill that was signed into law that gives the children of 100% disabled vets tuition free education at all NH State and Community Colleges. This year I updated that law to make sure if the vet passed away before the children got to college, that they would still be eligible. I guess I would say that my advice is to be the change you want to see. Get involved, make a plan and see it through. I’ve dedicated one of my M35A2’s to support anything and everything the local county organization may need in the way of support. We gather toys from events, the annual Christmas parade and set them up for handing them out to the kids. (REC Residence Encourting christ a jail ministy, TEC Together Encountering Christ, TEC Teans encounter christ, and Koinonia (simular for adults). All these retreats are a spin off from the original "Cursillo" retreats. I've also heard of one called "Walk to Emmaus"

Please note that in this posting I will use PTS since the present thought is that PTS is not a "Disorder" These symptoms are the body's natural response to the stressor. The term "Disorder" has a negative tone to it.
We noticed that the format of a regular retreat could be intimidating to veterans with PTS because of the crowds and other factors so we designed one for Veterans with PTS which was also support dog friendly. We coordinated with a veterans support organization called "Eagles healing Nest". By keeping the number of candidates small: about 12-20 and having almost all the team members veterans it was made welcoming and easier for everyone to relate. A few of the team members were experienced counselors from the Eagles nest.

One of the veterans had tried a regular TEC retreat but left early because the environment was too stressful. This veteran not only enjoyed the VET (Veterans Encountering Christ), but came back to work as a musician in future retreats.

We have not been able to hold these retreats for quite awhile now, but I believe they were helpful.
It is important that we remember our veterans and others with PTS and arrange options for them when developing programs. Remember that person in social settings who holds back, sits alone, or may seem a little off to us, may have PTS. Let's make more things accessible to them. Tornados can pop up with other forms of severe weather all year, while hurricanes are pretty much common June through November-December timeframe. When these tragedies take place. Cell phone usage can be severely affected to pretty much non-existent. We found that out really quick in Bay-St. Louis, Mississippi during hurricane Katrina. Situations like this happen and that is where HAM Radio steps in to save the day. HAM Radio is a growing and evolving hobby that can quickly transform one's skills from the various discipline areas (AM, FM, Voice, CW, Data just to mention a few) into a serious communicator that ties various state, federal and NGO entities together to move resources and get help where it is needed most. This past year, I have taken an interest in helping state and county emergency management work around some issues with radio wave propagation. When I was on active duty in the Marines, our unit (9th Communications Bn IMEF) did some research and development training with some "homebrew" antennas. We do not take the side of either party but explain what the law requires and once the information is understood in 74% of the time the situation is resolved in the service member's favor.
This is a great opportunity to give back and although it is not veteran centric it does support those who are currently serving in the Guard and Reserve forces. The members of the reserve components make up about 45% of our military forces and since 9/11 have been deployed on a regular basis all over the world. This is no longer the "Weekend Warriors" of the past.
If interested, please go to ESGR.mil and use the state committee tab to find your state and make contact if interested in becoming an ESGR member. S. S. Kearsarge in September 1964. I was on my active duty portion of my Naval Reserve Enlistment. My rank was E-3 Raman with a striker badge for Lithographer. I had been a Journeyman Printer in Chicago at the age of 5. My father was a printer and he was stuck with baby sitting me from the age of 4 until I was old enough to go to Kindergarten at 5 years old. I was bored with trying to find things to amuse myself so I decided to learn Typesetting. I already knew the alphabet and had to memorize where each letter went in a type case. The type case had 89 boxes for Capital and Lower Case letters, spaces, numbers, punctuation marks and things called ligatures. Those were combination letters like fi, fl, ffi, ffl and others. I passed the test just before I was able to go to kindergarten and became the youngest Journeyman Printer in the U.S. Because I had worked, either for my father or any print Shop that needed extra help, when I went aboard ship I had 16 years of printing experience.
When I entered the Print Shop I met the First Class Lithographer who was in charge. He was an E-6 and was close to his 20 years and retirement. I asked him why he was not at least a Chief Petty Officer. He said that he was brought up on Letterpress Printing and knew almost nothing about the NEW OFFSET PRINTING. I told him that I had been doing Offset Printing for a number of years and would be willing to teach him and possibly help him make Chief. He said NO. He would retire as a First Class in 18 months.
Within a week, I was running the Print Shop. The two 3rd Class Petty Officers knew far less about printing than I did and were willing to learn from me. Needless to say, I was advanced to Chief Petty Officer in 1972. I would have made it to Master Chief if it was not for Affirmative Action. In 1974, I was the only Chief Lithographer in the Navy who passed the Senior Chief's Exam. Because of Affirmative Action, a black Chief Lithographer in the Naval Reserve, who never took the exam that year, was advanced simply because he was black. I knew him and also knew that he had not worked as a Printer in more than 10 years. When he was advanced to Master Chief I felt that I would get his billet and get my advanced, ent to Senior Chief. I was not advanced. When I questioned it I was informed that the Senior Chief Billet was terminated and when the Master Chief retired, that billet would be terminated as well. So, I retired as a Chief Lithographer with 28 years and 9 months of service. At TAPS, a Military Mentor’s caring companionship of a child grieving the death of their military family member is the foundation of a caring TAPS family and Good Grief Camp programming. Military mentors are needed to pair with these children and work in small groups facilitated by an experienced leader.
Volunteering as a military mentor has a tremendous impact on surviving children. The one-on-one time with their mentor gives children and teens the companionship and support needed to connect with their peers and engage in activities. Their individual pairing with military mentors also signals to each child that they are worthy of the time and attention of others and maintains their connection with the military community. Compassionate and caring companionship from military mentors builds resilience, leadership and improves the healing of their mentees through positive role modeling. Most importantly, it creates hope.
TAPS understands that many of our Nation's service members and veterans are survivors too, having experienced the traumatic loss of a battle buddy. In addition to being a safe and supportive place of healing for surviving families, TAPS provides a healthy environment of mentorship and peer support for our Military Mentors. By mentoring with TAPS, service members and veterans learn to effectively express their grief and process emotion alongside their mentees and within their own peer group.
"We don't get to choose tragedy, but we do get to choose healing and I am very proud to be healing with TAPS." ~ MSgt Melissa Simpson, USAF, Retired and TAPS 2020 Military Mentor of the Year
Learn more about how you can become a TAPS Military Mentor for a child grieving the loss of a military loved one at our 28th Annual National Military Survivor Seminar and Good Grief Camp, or other events throughout the year, by visiting taps.org/militarymentor. All staff and board members are volunteers and no one is on a payroll. We all give back freely what has been given to us and pass the gifts along. We are a non-profit organization and hold 10 weekend retreats a year both in Houston and Milwaukee.
Having gone through the retreat myself in 2006, it has given me so much hope and I was able to address the demons I carried from Combat.
