I had the Montgomery GI Bill but didn’t use it in the ten year time frame. With the new forever bill, they don’t have a time limit. Not really fair, I was in during Dessert Storm even if my unit didn’t deploy I was ready, willing, and able. Can I get my bill reinstated?

2 questions:
1.) There are many conflicting regarding those who retired with the Montgomery GI Bill. I have heard that it is possible to partially use your Montgomery benefits prior to switching to the Post-9/11. Is that possible, and what would be the benefits of such use?
2.) Now that many universities are now offering online only classes, does this disallow the use of the GI benefits, which normally require at least one course to be taken at a physical, brick&mortar location?

Good Evening;

I’m not sure if you can help me, but maybe you can guide me to the right people. I am QMC Monchito Bumanlag, recently retired from the US Navy Reserve Detroit NOSC in 10/1/2019, but before I did, I transferred my GI Bill to my daughter (which I thought I did). To give you some background, I joined in 1993 and got out of active duty on 1997 and immediately joined the Navy Reserve. I got the Montgomery GI Bill for the 4 years active duty which I used 1 semester worth back then. Then on October 2013 through 2015 I got activated to active duty in Africa for 2 years which earned me post 911 GI Bill.
I was told that I have to complete another 4 years in the Reserves to complete the transfer the Post 9/11 GI Bill to my daughter, which I almost did. The obligation was 10/24/2019, but they retired me on 10/1/2019. I just found out about this when I checked my milconnect that my obligation wasn’t completed. It was originally that my retirement was on the 24th, but they asked me if I could move the retirement on the 1st because they have a change of command going on for that month, which I stupidly agreed. Is there anything you can do for me or point me to the right direction for help?
Now my milconnect account have this warning in their website:

You incurred a 4-year service commitment based on your transfer of Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to your
eligible dependent(s). Your current service commitment end date is: 20191024 The Selected Reserve
Transfer Date from your Service Component: 20170430 indicates that you have separated or transferred
prior to fulfie.lling the service commitment required to maintain your transferred benefit for your eligible
dependent(s). Please see your personnel service office to validate that your current Projected Separation
Date is accurate. Contact information for your service can be identified within the 'Message from Your
Service Component' box within the TEB Portlet. Warning: If you fail to fulfill your service obligation for
transferability the VA will cease further benefit award for dependent(s) and initiate Recoupment of all
transferred benefits paid. Note: Guard and Selected Reserve members are required to maintain a Selected
Reserve status during the Obligatory Service Time.

Please help, and thank you in advance for any help you can give me.

I am a new student at Howard University. I handled all of my requirements with the VA and provided all the documents my school asked for months ago. They have yet to confirm they received all of the documents and because of that I havent started to receive my GI Bill funds. I have been emailing different individuals constantly, trying to get them to provide me with any type of information. Is there anything I can do through the VA to get them to process my GI Bill things quicker or to hold them more accountable? The BAH is supposed to be paying my rent. At this point it is as if they are holding back the money I am entitled to.

I have 4 children in college at this present time. My children can get chapter 35 now but all schools are there schools are online. Is chapter 35 reduced due to online? Can anyone offer any suggestions?

Well maybe they left me with a bad taste in my mouth but I have zero faith in the G.I. bill and getting an education from them, earned or not. After a few tours in Vietnam and a chest full of honors you'd think it would mean something wouldn't you? I started my G.I. bill after I got out and went to school for a year. It got down to school or eating so I had to withdraw from school, which they said we could do and return later. Ok, I thought, and then I get a big surprise, the VA sent it to the IRS for collection. Get that? They took it back from me, and I guess from what I was told, they don't do that and that would make me the only guy ever, to have to pay back the G.I. bill. Well I did, or they did because I did pay it back So I got screwed out of it, I never got to go back to school again, even tho I did exactly what they told me to do. You'd think after an Honorable discharge, signed personally by Pres. Nixon, what should be 4 purple hearts, 2 gallantry crosses, 2 bronze stars with articles, highest weapons proficiency scores ever at Ft. Lewis , amongst everything else I did would amount to some kind of earned esteem. Back in 1980 I was told, while spitting up chunks of damage from agent Orange to not file a claim because I'd be dead before I would see any money. All this while dealing with Malaria, healing up from wounds, only to be told when I got out I'd have to pay back my education money. It took until 3 years ago when I seen Pres. Trump give Mike Rose his long overdue of the CMOH to rebuild some faith in the VA. After 45 years, at least he got some honor and recognition from them. Anyway, I wish you luck while dealing with the VA..

Will the VA be addressing the fact that schools are now only enrolling for online classes. While I live and attend my school locally, all of the classes are now only online due to the pandemic. They aren't coded as in class, because that wouldn't make sense. Now I don't get full rate BAH and I don't have another option! This really needs to be addressed.

I have the same question as SPC Dawn Adams. I am out of the Army now for a long time and a combat Iraqi freedom veteran. My GI bill timed out on me, because i came home to my two children, one still in diapers after the war & a 10 year old. I simply never had the time until my youngest got older to use my GI bill education benefit. So not until she was 16 did i try to start using them & they timed out by the time she was 18.Is there any support financially for veterans whose GI bill has timed out on them? I must take the classes otherwise i will never ever be promoted & a little help would sure be a blessing with a mortgage, my daughter in college-her car repairs my car repairs-groceries heat for the house in the winter is a killer and lights & telephone bills. as it is i literally am praying to make it thru this coming winter & am frightened by my credit card balance approaching 10 thousand already-when you don't make much in wages-these things make or break you financially. I've had doctors bills for my daughter that i couldn't pay already for over two years. I am grateful for the few classes i did take on my GI bill & for the opportunity to learn & better myself. I just want to double check to see if there may be any further help i am not aware of & have failed to seize the opportunity on. Thank you for any guidance you can give on this subject.

I'm pursuing a comp sci degree and I've exhausted my post 9/11 benefits, but I was approved for the Edith Nourse Rogers STEM scholarship. My question is, am still eligible for the VETTEC program as well? I know you're supposed to have at least one remaining day of Post 9/11 benefit left, but I'm curious as to whether the STEM scholarship would count since the VA page states "The Rogers STEM Scholarship will provide up to nine months of additional Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits". Anyone have any info on this?

Quick question. I didn't taker the GI Bill when I entered the military back in 1986. I was wondering if the VA has any scholarships for older veterans to return to school? I am looking into going to a Christian un University to become a preacher and am looking for some help with finances. I have a 100% service connected disability currently. I paid into the old GI Bill program ($100/mo for 12 months) but never used any of my benefits (I used Tuition Assistance to finish school). I then converted to the Post 9/11 and transferred my GI Bill benefit to my son and thought I was going to get a refund on what I paid. Unfortunately, I was told that since I didn't use any of my old GI Bill, I wasn't entitled to a refund. If I had used some of my benefits, then I was entitled to a refund. This does not sound right to me. Have the rules changed to catch up with this mistake? Thanks.

I am currently enrolled as 1st year college student here in the Philippine (foreign school) and its my first time to use the GI Bill. just wanna ask how long would it take the process for the VA to send to my school my tuition fee and my MHA. I pay out of my pocket for the school downpayment. And I am a dependent of a veteran, will my MHA fall under VA Rate or Dod Rate? Thanks in advance.

I was honorably discharged in 2006, I served in both Gulf Wars, and when I was just charged for the final time I was never told about a post 911 education benefit that is available to me. I've tried calling numerous places to find out if it is possible to transfer this benefit to my son who is just starting his first year in college. In 2006 my son was four years old and I had no idea he would even want to attend college plus the benefit was not even a thing yet. And now I'm being told after just finding out that the post 911 benefit is available for me to use, but I cannot transfer it, because I was supposed to transfer it before I got out. How was I supposed to transfer something that was not in existence in 2006? Someone please help so that my son can benefit from my service

I used some GI college benefits in 1977-1979. The questions: Can I get GI benefits for college? Am I wasting my time going to college? Am I wasting time trying to seek a technical or teaching job? I am 70 years old and in good health. In spite of what the law says, age discrimination does exist (I have not and will not press the age issue.)

can Veterans use Chapter 31 (VocRehab) benefits to pay for a Master degree? Asking fora friend that has been job searching within his field of experience for the past 3 years without success. Looking for something in a new field that has high probability of hiring and will also allow him to work without exacerbating his service-connected medical condition disabilities. I keep getting stories about the VA simply dissaproving benefits for a Masters degree or having to convince a counselor. Everyone I spoke so far tells me the same thing: getting past convincing a counselor to sign off on approving the submission of a Masters degree program packet is just something unheard of in this lifetime.

Is it possible or not?... can a counselor really deny before submitting it? why wold they? (is it like the DA4187's that even if the Commander disapproves, they still have to be moved up the chain for approval/dissaproval?)... again, asking for a friend! lol

I was awarded the Lockheed Martin scholarship. It says I can use this to Pat for tuition, books, housing, etc. It is made out to my school. I have the check. My school National Aviation Academy, Clearwater, FL says it has to be applied to tuition per Post 9-11. I called VA/Post 9-11 number. I spoke with a case manager, can’t remember their title. He told me I could use it to pay my mortgage (I’m in forbearance due to Covid).
I go talk to my school and they ask for an email stating that I can use the Lockheed Martin scholarship to pay for housing. Because the Post 9-11 covers all of my tuition.
I ask the VA/Lost 911 people to put it in a letter I email. They tell me they can’t do this.
I really need access to these funds. If I’m not able to receive the scholarship monies, then what is the point in applying?!?
Please someone em help me rectify this issue. Something great is turning into a major frustration for me. Thank you.

Sgt. Lauren Augustine, recognizing the great work of the SVA and as member at Walden University, I am addressing some issues that I believe SVA could play a pivotal role in the academic community. Walden has established an inside influence on the students enrollment with the various platforms associated with their academics; ie Student Aid, Veterans status (VHA, Agency leaders) and other affiliations. These affiliations have presented a conflict of interest in the decision making roles for the student distinguishing their academics from administrative actions when presented. My concerns are that the SVA at the Chapter levels may improve the academic experience if they could act as advocates and represent in their roles for student fairness and to provide a comprehensive approach to problem solving for veteran students. My question is, are the restrictions on SVA Chapters to support the veterans in their academic pursuits and to what extent can the student expect support?

I participated in the Montgomery GI Bill (1990-2000) I left the USN after 10 years honorable service returning to my childhood home of NYC in late 2000 with every intention of using my GI Bill

Got a job with Regional EMS; and responded to the WTC attack on 9/11, after which it was very very difficult to make a living in NYC, making it near impossible to do so and go to school.

And so by the time I was able, I got very little use out of it before it expired.

Now the question, I know we're old and that the priority are our brothers & sisters that have rotated out more recently, but with all that's going on and the need to "reinvent" oneself to get a job, is there any discussion of extending our benefits?

In contrast the "Post 9-11" bill is for life, the irony has never escaped me.

1. I was told from another vet that if I have at least 30 days left on my GI Bill I can switch it to the Vocational Rehabilitation... Is this true?

2. When getting out, one of the instructors mentioned children being able to go to college for free up to 8yrs... what is the name of that program or the list of schools that are enrolled in it?

3. Due to COVID, a lot of schools are pushing online only... has the GI BILL made adjustments for this? I know in order to recieve all your benefits for the GI BILL you need to have some classes on campus.

I was never told my GI bills ( had 2 of them because I joined the Reserves first) would expire.
Now I can't use what I PAID INTO. I have 3 questions. I am using my Post 9/11 education benefits in Hawaii. I am an IT student at 2 year community college planning to transfer to 4 year university in Hawaii.

The 3 questions.

1. I recieved an email from VA an extend delimiting dates to GI bill programs due to Covid 19. I was in school at this time and camus closed and went to remote online class for the remainder and our finals. If I applied for this how long would they extend the delimiting date for school? My beneifts expire September 2022. I am in last semester fall and I should graudate with AS in Information Technology.

2. I want to continue my IT education after AS IT degree 2 year what options do I have to extend my education benefits to finish my 2 years for a undergraduate degree in Information Technology in Hawaii at the Univeristy of Hawaii. Edith Norse Rogers Stem Scholarship? Is it an option for undergraduate degree in Information Technology to finish school under VA?

3. Last question the VET TEC program is this a good option for me as a Veteran who wants to get into Information Technology? What I read about the program its new, and when I looked at schools in Hawaii there were no programs on the list of schools for Hawaii. Accepted into a program by a VA-approved training provider none in Hawaii.

I was awarded three more years on my G.I. Bill starting August 2020. I am homeless and staying at a veterans transitional retreat. I was getting SSDI. It was cut off in 2018. I was homeless then also. I owe another institution money to even be able to get my transcripts. That is stopping me from going to school at this current time. I am wondering what steps should I take? This is an ongoing battle.

If I have only one month remaining on my GI Bill (transferred it all to my kids), and I'm 100% P&T disability after retiring, what would be a good course of action for me to receive assistance for continuing education. I'm not in a position where I can't work (in fact, I have a job), but I can't afford school out of pocket. I'm 2 classes from my Bachelor degree, would like to look into a Masters if possible and am already an O2O alumni (did that upon retiring).

Are their any scholarships or grants Veterans can apply for that will pay for your text books? I have been unable to find any, so there probably aren't, but I wanted to ask anyway. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

I am currently in a Grant Per Diem Program. I have HUD/VASH for housing. The housing limit amount is 659.00. There is no way to find anything decent in that price range for this area. Who could I contact to rectify or voice my concerns on this issue? I don't wanna step on no one toes but this is a real issue.

I am an outreach specialist with STRIPES-Veterans Upward Bound in Oklahoma. We are 1 of 50 federally funded programs for veterans through the Dept of Education. Just something to consider, different states have Veteran benefits that you should all consider beyond what you've earned with the VA. For example, when I was retiring, I learned that the state from which I entered military service (Alabama) provides free college tuition and books for all dependents of any Veteran with 30% or greater service-connected disability. This applies to any state college in Alabama. I used this benefit to pay for dependent education and was then able to transfer my Post 9/11 GI Bill back to myself to earn a second masters degree.

GI BILL- STEM EXTENSION TO A MASTER'S?
I used all my GI BILL and STEM Program to complete my bachelors of sciences in nursing, class of 2020. Is there any other program that will allow me to complete a master's degree? I don't feel safe practicing at this time.

I am due to retire in 2 years concerned social security won't be enough. The VA helped me through vo-tech years ago, will they help me again through an on-line course training in gunsmithing to start a new business? I have a 40% service connected disability

My question is ...is there a way to get a Medical Coding and Billing course / certification paid for through any benefits? I believe I have used all others like the GI and Voc Rehab many years ago. Thanks
