My Flag.
As long as these two legs can stand, with or without help, this old man will be standing and saluting when she goes by. There might be a tear in my eye, but that's probably the wind, or dust, or something. Fifty stars. I guess I could put the name of a fallen friend, comrade, or brother on each one of those fifty stars, and still have a few names left over for the stripes. Me and her went a lot of places in 22 + years, some friendly, some downright hostile. She's flown from a holder by the door of my house, from a pole mounted on the bed of my pickup truck, from a flagpole out front of the house, and on a holder on the rear door of my SUV. Once, somebody came by the house when I wasn't home, and I found its ashes when I returned. But I never stopped loving her, never stopped respecting her, even when others bad mouthed her, stomped her underfoot, burned her. I'm an old man, now. And I'm a lot closer to that time when they'll take this tired old body away in a casket while my soul goes on to meet Jesus.
I guess I'm finished talking now. But wait. It occurs to me that, when my time comes, it'll probably be pretty cold in that casket. So, if you don't mind, just to keep the chill off til I get to my grave, could you cover my casket with something? Something like
My Flag.
