Greetings thank you for taking your time to read my question. I am currently an E3 and am part of the Florida National Guard. My MOS is 91B diesel mechanic and I joined the guard 11/20/2012. I am trying to get all the info that I can find on transferring to active duty. I am more than willing to reclass to a different MOS to do so. I am still pretty new and don't quite understand the prior service rules completely. I was wondering if there are any active duty recruiters from Florida that can shine a light on the subject.

Thank you very much for your attention.

I heard from an Army recruiter friend that they are doing what they can to cut back right now. It may be really tough, but not impossible. Have you tried looking at other branches? I do know that the Coast Guard is hurting for QUALIFIED new recruits.

I was in the same place you were in the 90s. I joined the Marine Corps Reserves in 1990 and was told that if I did not like it, I was only serving one weekend a month. If I loved it, I could easily go into the active duty side. In 1991, I started my process to try and get to the active side. The service climate then(Clinton Years) was exactly as it is now. Cutbacks in personnel, money, and missions. The military was basically neglected during this time. Well after taking my request all the way to the SgtMaj of the Marine Corps, I was denied permission to augment. I was crushed.

A friend told me about the Coast Guard. I thought it was a Navy National Guard, so I was not really interested at first. Also, I did not want to wear cracker-jacks and bell bottoms. LOL Anyway, I broke down and gave them a call. I was in Coast Guard bootcamp by May of 1992. I have not looked back since. The Coast Guard is a great branch of service that has something for everyone. As a Corpsman, I have done everything from seeing patients in a clinic, to independent medical duty on a couple of ships, to two tours in OIF, to as an E7/8, running my own clinic. I am now at CG Headquarters overseeing the service's medical information systems as a CWO. I have been in a total of 24 years and hope to do many more, if possible.

BTW, about 20-30% of our folks are prior service. We have lots of Army and Marine Corps vets.

SPC (Join to see) - No worries Specialist. If you want to talk about the the Coast Guard and our missions, please feel free to shoot me a PM. I will pass my number and email. I can tell you that if you are a Spanish speaker, that will help. I am not a recruiter, but I can give you some non-BS answers and information on what this branch is like. The way I see it is that we have lots of prior service DoD... but I only know of two who left the CG for another branch.

LT (Join to see) I really appreciate your comments, very knowledgeable. Very interested now in the CG. Have been doing research at work today on the CG. I wonder if they have an opening for Information Technology position. Will send you a PM. Thank you again

I went from the national guard to active duty twice, but that was many moons ago. Back then I just needed my commander to release me. I’ve seen other soldiers do it and they never had a problem. I don’t think many commanders will stand in your way to go active duty.

As far as what options the active duty recruiter can offer, that changes often according to the needs of the Army.

Good luck.

Thank you for your answer SFC Pakenham

I did read about the conditional release and i'm trying to get info from my unit to see if they would release me. We had a guy recently transfer to the Navy (granted it took about 8 months wait but he got it approved. I guess i'm just trying to get info from an A.D. recruiter that I can take to my commander.

Again thank you for your response and have a great day.

As much as the active side is downsizing the guard side is trying to maintain and in some cases grow. Most likely they do not want to lose the investment that has been made with state dollars.
