Get asked this question a lot but never have an answer for Soldiers. I have done some of my own research and have not found the correct regulations on the transition between the Warrant and Officer if there is a professional equivalent cross over? I have heard that if you are a cyber security warrant and want to cross over to Officer that its possible to become a 1LT or CPT but never got a legitimate answer on this.

To follow up. Do you have to go to OCS? As a CW3 do you still start at 2LT. Is there any situation that you are offered a higher officer rank as a W3?

Yes, you need to go to OCS. Yes, you still start over as a 2LT (usually). The individual branches can prescribe advanced grade entry, the same way AMEDD and Chaplain Officers come into the service at higher pay grade based on their unique skill set. I believe when Cyber was established as a branch and they did grade determination boards and there were limited opportunity to come in to the branch at advanced grades based on qualifications.

Generally, I would say "no"... it's unlikely that any branch would let you enter at an advanced grade because your Warrant Officer experience is not the same as most O-grade jobs. I've known a few Aviators who have switched from Warrant to Officer and even they need to start over as a 2LT, and quite frankly speaking, they have the most direct correlation between WO and O since all officers go to the same flight school. Other branches have completely separate WOBC and BOLC so you aren't even necessarily learning the same thing in PME. The problem with people entering at a higher grade is they miss that key developmental time the officer needs to be competitive for promotion to higher grades.

With all that being said though, Cyber is a completely new animal and a lot of ideas have been kicked around the past few years to attract and retain the special skillset needed for Cyber (things like waiving height/weight) that would have never been considered for any other branch... so in the future... who knows?

What exactly is your question? It's unclear from the title. Are you wanting the regulations that cover the transition? Are you wanting insight into the process? What do you mean by "professional equivalent"? Clear questions get better answers here on RP.
