I was just told this by a security guard at the store who was a teenager during 1960s, the average age of both. He said it had a lot of reasons how the SM would adjust.

I disagree. Age has nothing to do with how a service member adjusts.

Average age of a WWII soldier was 26, that is a historical fact. But, 61.2% where drafted vs 38.8% that volunteered. In Vietnam 25% where drafted vs 66% that volunteered.

because of the Draft the Average age was 19.9 years old... and the average age, because of the volunteers from all walks of Life was 26.5 years old...
the 18 came from Propaganda and Anti-war songs...
