Why exactly did the government take $43 million dollars in tax payers money to send to Afghanistan to fund the worlds most expensive gas station?
The project was first projected to only cost $3 million. How in the world did it get up to $43 million? Especially when similar stations in Afghanistan only cost around $300,000. Something is definitely wrong with this picture.
And we wonder why our deficit is so high.
It's things like this that need to be cut back or done away with.

..."part of a program to convince Afghan drivers to switch from gasoline and encourage it's nascent natural gas industry"...
This. Is. So. Profoundly. Stupid.
What is next? Maybe a solar-powered monorail from Kabul International Airport to the Presidential Palace? Even the most rudimentary measures of effectiveness and feasibility study would have sunk this project in the cradle.
I've seen a lot of idiotic projects in my 13 years in Civil Affairs, but this one is right up there.

Then there is the choice of location. Sheberghan is nowhere near anything. Which I have to say, at first blush appears to not be an accident. It is hard to get to, and as such hard to look at and question. I would wager that if we follow the money, we will see very clearly who got their bread buttered.
This one is worth getting to the bottom of. It sounds like the organization running this project was way off the reservation.

Sgt Kelli Mays, graft. No doubt about it. That is the ONLY thing that would make this make sense to anyone.

Not shocked...the government was giving cash payments to Afghan tribes to not attack our bases on a monthly basis. Just another example of throwing good money after bad.
