I was stationed at RAF Lakenheath in England. We had ended a budget meeting, and we were in the base HQ. A couple of people were watching a TV in the foyer, right before the second aircraft hit the World Trade Center towers. When that second aircraft hit, we knew we were under attack and were going to war. As the public affairs manager for the base, we went into our crisis communications mode. It was 2pm in England. I didn't leave the office until the next morning since we went on 12-hour shifts. It was tragic, but I was also amazed at the outpouring of compassion and love that our British community showed to our assigned service members, families and civilians.

I joined in 1986 but I started volunteering for mobilizations and additional training after 9/11. Most everyone wanted to do their part in supporting the Global War on Terrorism and preventing attacks in America, Canada and Western Europe.

Hello! I wanted to take the opportunity to reach out and see if you have heard of a Vet Center? Based on your service in a combat zone, you are eligible to receive services offered at any of our 300 Vet Centers. We provide individual and group counseling as well as marriage and family counseling. Vet Centers are great ways to connect with others who may share similar military experiences and to who you can easily relate. Our Vet Center teams do a fantastic job of building community and connection at our local facilities, and all of this is at no cost and without a time or session limit. Please let us know if we can connect you to your nearest Vet Center, or if you would like your local Vet Center Outreach Specialist to contact you.

I was in my senior year of high school, living in NYC and on sept 11, I was scheduled to go down to the recruiting office right by the World Trade Center when the unthinkable happened. My father worked across the street from the towers but luckily made it out safely. I didn’t go downtown that day but instead waited about a week or so before heading out there. My mind had been made up about enlisting before sept 11, but the attacks just made my resolve stronger. I went to boot camp that following summer and stayed enlisted for almost 10 years.
