What advice can NCO's and Prior Enlisted Officers give to a NCO who is considering Green to Gold Active Duty Option?

As a newly promoted Sergeant, I am considereing applying for the ADO Green to Gold. I have heard from some that I must apply through Cadet Command and some say I don't have to. It only makes sense to have to apply through Cadet Command because I am currently active duty and want to get paid while I go to school. Cadet Command says I have to and while it seems I should be ok with knowing this, I have some Officers who were ROTC Instructors telling me that I do not have to, and we all know there there are many ways to accomplish most everything in the Army. However, I would like to get an idea from some of the Officers perspectives on the change, yet hearing from all ranks is a great way for me to balance this out because it is something that will set the course for the rest of my career.

This option is a very good option and one I considered at one time. I would highly recommend using this option if you are selected for it. You can't beat getting paid while getting your degree.

SGT Hargett,
Just last year I was in the same position you are in, a newly promoted SGT interested in applying for a Green to Gold Scholarship. The disappointing part for me was there wasn't a whole lot of information for me to go off of. A soldier from another unit informed my of the CG Hip Pocket Scholarship Program. I'm not sure what the policy is in Korea, but at Ft. Riley I needed to send a packet (ERB, Awards, DA Photo, Physical, and Recommendation Letters) to Division to have it reviewed by the CG. Once he approved it and formally awarded me the scholarship, my Division Retention sent the packet to CDT CMD to be reviewed and they have final say on if you are accepted as a cadet or not. Hopefully this helps you a little bit, but know that there are many options out there if you're serious about getting it done. Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions about the process, I'll do the best I can to help you out.

Cadet Robinson,
Thank you for this valuable information. Did you have to have to have it submitted by the normal CDT CMD deadline of 01FEB or did it go any time because it was the Hip Pocket Scholarship? Unfortunately I can only do the Active Duty Option because of my age. I am 32 and ADO is waiverable up to 39 but you have to commission by your 39th birthday is what I was told.

SGT Hargett,
I depends on what semester you want to start. I started in August and I believe I had to have my packet submitted to Cadet CMD before April 1st. But as you know, Company, BN, BDE all wanted to review it before it went to DIV so my packet was submitted around NOV. If you want to knock some stuff out of the way I would definitely suggest applying to schools because the first thing they are going to ask for is the acceptance letter to your institution of choice.
I'm sure you're already tracking this but just remember you need at least 60 credit hours to do ADO.

I have seen most Soldiers use the G2G Active duty option because of the option of still receiving the pay while working towards their degree. If you are fine with the ADO idea then I would definitely stick with it. Of course you came to the right place for answers.
I was amazed with how many commands got G2G yearly slots and they went unclaimed year after year. Being a senior NCO I always receive the email when we get closer to the deadline - XX slots available to Fort/Post and only 25% currently used. IT makes you wonder if a lot of Soldiers are getting the information or even being talked to about these awesome options.
Congrats for making the division to better yourself - best of luck!

I agree with you completely! How many G2G Scholarships are being wasted and why don't the Soldiers know more about it. As a 1SG I still don't here about it. It upsets me because I have a number of Soldiers who would like to use one of these Scholarships.

Usually you can talk to your education office and they can let you know how many slots the base has and how many are still open. When I was in Germany the entire country had 15 slots and only 3 Soldiers had submitted packets.
