What advice do you guys have for a boy wanting to join the army?

Choose an MOS that will directly transfer to the civilian sector. Do the minimum enlistment to qualify for education benefits and the GI Bill. Then take your training and get out. Things are getting worse by the week....

First, why do you want to join? And asking for advice while lying about your employment (and name, I suspect) is not a good way to start. You are not Sponge Bob.

Make sure that you do not take "no" for an answer. If there is a job available to you that you REALLY want, make sure you get it.

Unless he is dead set on the Army, have him check out careers in the forgotten service, the US Coast Guard. I was USN, USAR, then USCG and retired. Best twenty years of my career, bar none. A few constructive hours of solid investight ion of the USCG could potentially change his life. Well, that's my ten cents worth.

First find out if you are even qualified to enlist, before you get your hopes up. 80% of 18-24 year olds do not meet current enlistment standards.

I would tell them not to join at all. The military has become a joke and a full-on fraud for those who are mislead into thinking they will be protecting the rights of the citizens and the "freedom," we enjoy.
