You should get a briefing immediately before shipping out, or before you first go on liberty. Pay attention and remember.

If your liberty buddies tell you something is OK to do, but it seems odd to you, watch them do it a few time before you try it. There's no fun like making the FNG look stupid.

Locals do not like drunk, loud jackasses. If you drink heavy, save that for on post and don't leave post until you sober up. Korean police don't care that you are a US citizen or a US Soldier. They also don't have the same rules about use of force that our police have. They can and will kick your ass if you provoke them. The Koreans liked Americans who are well-behaved and looked out for us on liberty. They know we help keep the North Korean wolf away from the door.

Pick up a language course for the local language and learn it. It goes a long way with the locals, and it just makes you smarter. Over there your the "stupid foreigner" that can't speak the language and mispronounces simple words.

Take a sincere, respectful, and friendly attitude toward the foreign nationals that work on post. They may have an accent, but they're not stupid. Many G.I.'s don't have a good attitude, or worse they have a bad attitude toward the locals on post. The Koreans on post may laugh at some jokes at their expense, but inside they're thinking "jackass." The locals can keep you out of trouble, and help you make the most out of your time in a foreign country. If you ever get invited to a local's home, feel honored (but make sure you let the S-2 know before you go.)

Never make fun of or over estimate your place with a Korean senior citizen, they may forgive you, but the young ones will notice how respectful you are of your elders.

There is a lot more to a foreign country and culture than the bar district outside the main gate. The culture, food and leisure time are well worth the tour. Get off the camps and visit the history of the land, you’d be surprised how accepted you are to the people just by learning simple phrases in everyday life, and yes, there’s even benefits that come along with trying to communicate. Young women your age is like any other in the world. They’re curious and want to experience new things. In other words there are tons of things to do yes but it don't mean doing the wrong things. One thing to always keep in mind is the 4 questions you can ask yourself. Also make sure that any relationships you do have whether long term or short you practice safe sex. Drink slower than everyone else. It is OK to get drunk once in a while but always be less drunk than everyone else.
2. Know the rules and follow them. Especially curfew.
3. If you are a paratrooper and from Bragg, you will notice a HUGE difference in soldiers and leadership of people from leg posts. They are SUPER bored, just play the games. It is only a year.
4. DONT BE A BARRACKS RAT! Get out and explore. Try ALL the foods. Especially the squid being cooked on hot rocks in the street. It smells horrifying but is the most delicious thing you will put in your mouth.
5. Don't be intimidated by the language. Go to langintro.com and study for an hour a night. For the first week, just do the alphabet and maybe some numbers. By the weekend you will be reading all the signs. By month 6 if you keep it up you are talking to people in Hangul. Seriously. This is probably your best tip. Learning the Russian alphabet and some key phrases is helpful too while you are there. You'll see.
6. Use your downtime wisely. There may be lulls where you are locked down to camp/base. Take a correspondence course or online course at a university and actually apply yourself in it.
7. The mink blankets you buy in Korea last a lifetime. Buy many, ship them home. While you're at it, grab a couple for your barracks room and get some satin/silk sheets too.
8. Get internet in your room as soon as you can. Pick up a magic jack. Put a computer on a VPN into the USA (Nord is a good choice) and boom, your family and friends have a local number they can call you on. Stay in touch with family.
9. Korea is a good time to either excel or fail. Some E5s come back E4s. Be ambitious, take initiative, ask your leadership what steps you need to take to make the next rank and exceed those standards.
10. Keep your dick in your pants. I can't emphasize this enough. Korea is where ugly troops become beautiful for a year. You will see the queen bees walking around with her following of troops buying her everything. Avoid at all costs. Some are married and screwing around on their spouse and that is nothing but trouble. Don't go falling in love with a green card bandit either. Those are the Philippinas and Russian girls off post in the ville. I understand the rules have changed since I have been there, but they are still there in a lot of places.
11. Get you a train/bus prepaid card. We called them the Camsahamnida (Thank You) cards. It is worth it.
Anything you like to do in the USA is in Korea. Stay away from the depressed barracks rats that are super homesick. This is an opportunity of a lifetime to get out and see something and try something new. Many of us veterans would go back in a heartbeat that actually did get out. Though, most just complain about how much it sucked. Trust me, this could be a staycation for you compared to Afghanistan or Iraq.

Lastly, If you get a chance to see the DMZ on a tour or mission or any reason, DO IT. Koreans are intelligent, industrious, hard working and generally nice. They have a history that is fascinating. Go on as many tours as possible and learn about your host country. Try to LEARN THE LANGUAGE. Understand and appreciate the cultural differences. Don't ever forget that the most important thing in life to most Koreans is FAMILY.

WRT Korean women, they're like any other country; good and bad. If you feel the need to date a Korean, stay away from the bar girls. If you do find a decent young woman, be aware that many Koreans - especially the women - will think the worst and look down on her for dating an American. She is risking a lot by going out with you.

As soon as possible, buy a transit card at a local train, bus or subway station. You can use them to pay for all public transportation including taxis. They can be re-charged.

Finally, I can highly recommend the Nul Dongdak 1977 Fried chicken Restaurant. Take subway line 5 to Dongdaemun History & Cultural Park station and go out extit 7. They are right across the street. They open about 4 PM. The fried chicken is fantastic and the cost is nominal. You will be subject to their laws. You screw up...and you WILL "pay the price".
You represent the USA... DON'T be arrogant or haughty. You have been given an opportunity to visit a
place that many can just dream about. Set some "travel books", take pictures, learn a little of the language (forget about reading...man...that's confusing!).
Check with your base's Services Center. They'll help you a lot.
You will see many things on the "econ" that are different from us and "our ways". Ask why...to learn,
don't be judgemental, remember where you're at. Buy and ship home your souvenirs and mementos. They're great to add to your stories when you get back home. They'll bring back the memories.
STAY AWAY FROM DRUG USAGE. You'll just get the "short end of the stick", you just and might be "singled out" by LEO or the MP's... or CID.
Hook up with a friend and explore together...Meet a "local lady" to help teach and have a good time with, not a "Bar Fly" that only wants your bucks. And even then...show them respect, you'll get respect back.
All in all...do your job. When you're off duty...HAVE SOME FUN! Don't hide "on base".
As an "old MP" stationed in Japan: '70 -'72, these things I learned...some easy...some not so easy. I had to enforce the law and deal with those who didn't follow it...it's not that difficult...really.
But if you stay with your common sense, don't "run with the crowd" only, "be casual", and don't "overspend", you will have memories and stories to share...forever.
That's my "shpeal"..."the end". Especially if you come from a less tolerant racist/radical State. Korea is quite advanced now and you may find yourself in shock as to how different it is from where you are coming from. If you're a millennial it is recommended that you learn the local customs and make an effort to actually communicate with Koreans and not look at your smart phone while doing so. First and foremost remember that your an ambassador of the United States. In other words "be mindful of your actions, and respect the cultures of their people. Don't be a belligerent jerk, and if you enjoy cold beverages drink in moderation! The armed forces of today are not the same as in the 50's,60's and beyond. You can and will be discharged for over indulging with alchohol etc and in some cases with other than honorable conditions. Open your eyes and mind to an exciting cultural experience, there's more than booze and the hookers. Try foods you never imagined that you would eat , take in the countryside and above all go on as many tours as possible. The ignorance of one's actions back home, will not be tolerated by the Korean ROK. The won't just incarcerate people for stupid shit ,they'll provide you with a first hand lesson of kungfu and karate in the likes of which you never saw on a movie screen. There are libraries, arts and crafts shops, gyms on every post, go find a new hobby or make a new friend and try their hobby. I played some tabletop war games (Squad Leader) I played some D&D, learned to play spades ( never trump your partner, he will draw a bayonet on you) I also made friends with the KATUSAs in my unit. That allowed me to travel to towns where the US posts are not present and buy Korean items not made to empty a GIs pocket. Take advantage of MWR tours, they were limited when I was there as I was close to the DMZ but I know guys who learned a lot of culture while they were there and had a lot of good times. The suggestions to get to know the culture and the people are spot on. When I was there every compound (and there were many - my battalion had three - one with HQ and a firing battery and the other two with one firing battery each. Korea they had a Korea/America club. It brought you into contact with Koreans and helped you understand their culture and language. If the Rec center has one of those clubs jump in and learn first hand. Above all remember what the cook from the Muppets Take Manhattan said, "Peoples is peoples. " They are not gooks, zipper heads, flat faces nor rice eaters. They are people with feelings and a proud heritage just like you. You will do well with the Korean people if you learn the customs and act respectfully. Actually you could use that anywhere you go. Never follow someone somewhere you have not been to b4 unless you trust them with your life and even then be careful. Korea is like Fantasy Island, If you have the money anything is possible. Be very careful of the Black Market or if someone asking you to buy/pay for something for them unless you know you are getting a lot of money for it or willing to go to the Monkey House(JAIL!). They have a sad song for everything and a con for everyone. There are good ones just be selective. Some KATUSAs (Korean Augmentation To United States Army)will show you the right places to go to or help buy something cheaper. Slicky boy/girl will get you and steal your wallet and your dreams. Be careful of soldiers you do not know that have been there and short timers as they will play tricks on a Cherry Boy/Turtle (Naïve person/Newby). If you do not want trouble, Do not wet a $20 bill and stick it to your forehead then walk in a bar. It is a common practical joke for Turtles among other things. FYI, A Turtle is a newcomer to Korea and In-Processing and out-processing buildings are normally just a few feet apart, Hence, A Turtle would take a whole year to walk 20 feet. ALWAYS WEAR A RUBBER, Sometimes two or three as the guards or UPs(Unit Police) like poking holes in them b4 they hand them out at the gate. Better yet Buy your own and not catch the Clap, Syphillis or worse knock up a Korean girl as they want that more than your money so you will marry them, DONT Do That !! Unless you really Love them and not just for an Overnight Unless they are paying you a ton of money. It has been a long time since I have been in country so policy changes are likely but GREED NEVER CHANGES. Hey Enjoy yourself if you are single really enjoy. If you are married then stay in contact with the wife and call as often as possible, write letters and send pictures of country side. This is part of a lifetime of lessons from one year of duty in Korea, It can be the best or worst assignment of your career just keep your head on a swivel and think 3 times be fore doing anything, but do it quickly. Find out about their customs and try to incorporate this into your dealings with the locals. Try to learn some Korean. Relations with the locals usually go a little better if you take the effort to learn at least some of their language instead of being a stereotypical American and expecting everyone to cater to you. Enjoy your time there. Get out and visit the local area. I was always amazed at the number of junior enlisted, and some senior enlisted, that never left the base during their entire tour and then complained about how bad the location was. Travel. You probably will never have another opportunity to have so many other countries so close to you and available for travel. A one or two hour plane ride from Seoul can get you to a lot of beautiful places. Just for your sanity, don't be the soldier that goes to Camp ICantStandThis and stay on base, never interacting with the local community. NEVER mess with curfews. When it's time its it's time.

2. Never go anywhere off post by yourself. Avoid all off area locations.

3. I was in 2nd Inf Div. On stationed on the DMZ for a year. We were only allotted a certain percentage of our unit on pass for the weekend to travel south. It averaged out to be about once a month. So I really can't say how Seoul is.

4. Get all the online and correspondence courses you can. Korea is a great place to better yourself mentally and physically. Again I didn't get off base very much and all we did was train and go to the gym.

5. Any female you run across in the club is looking out for herself only. She will love you and 50 other GIs if it makes her money and a possible green card.

6. Shopping is great. Whether you like shoes or clothes you will find it. If you like to wear suits Korea is the place to be. They can literally make anything from a picture in a magazine with your choice of cloth.

7. And like everyone else has said learn some basic language and phrases. It will go a long way out in the back 40 or in town.

8. Do not ever disrespect an elder on the street. Unlike our culture they have a lot of respect for their elders and will you as just another disrespectful american. Every where you go you represent the good old USA. Don't let us down.

9. Last but not least have fun and be safe. Don't be a barracks rat and don't be "Ville warrior" In other words. Don't sit in the barracks and be miserable. Get out and see the country. You can take tours all over. Don't let the old-timers drag you down into the "Ville" to get drunk and cause trouble. You can go out once in a while but be careful. The bar girls in the clubs are pros at getting you to spend money on them. If you can make friends with the KATUSAs (Korean Augmentation to the US Army)in your unit you can make some life-long friends. Most units have KATUSAs integrated into every squad. They are Korean soldiers assigned to augment us. They live work and train as American soldiers. This is the number one piece of advice I would give to every soldier going to a foreign country. Don't be arrogant and think that you are better than the locals. Koreans are not stupid just because they look different or speak another language. Especially the KATUSAs. They speak Korean and English and sometimes Chinese. How many languages do you speak? Korea has several of the world's largest car companies, they are the largest builder of ships in the world. Several of the biggest tech companies are Korean. Oh and here's a big one. Koreans don't sit around eating dogs. And don't be afraid you won't accidentally order it from the menu at your local restaurant. You can find dog meat but it is a delicacy and expensive. They do have them hanging in their butcher shops. Eating dog meat came about because of the Korean war when people didn't have any food, but dogs were running all over. In Vietnam it was rats. During our own Civil War, it was horses. So don't judge.
Don't be a barracks rat. Sign up for tours through the travel office. Get to know the people. Otherwise, you will go back to the states telling people that your tour sucked, you stayed drunk, chased bar girls, and the people smelled bad. That is not Korea. I would advise you to go on line and learn about the Korean Culture and food...and the surrounding area you are going to.
