The majority of your junior personnel are in their 20s. Still new to "adult life" and learning the ropes, what advice would you offer them when it came to life in the military, day to day life, finances, marriage, etc.

I realized today that my junior personnel are still so "green" when it comes to many things I find "obvious". What advice would you offer those in their 20s?

My wife keeps saying 'What?" That is because I wear hearing aids, and my vocalizations are done at a much reduced volume, because I think that I am now speaking at the correct volume. I answer that with a rolling of my eyes, an exasperated sigh, and a, "If you were listening to me in the first place," followed with an, "It's not important." Then when she persists, I tell her that her cat just died, the porch roof fell in, or that I am leaving her for that good looking babe that moved in next door.

My wife has taken care to listen to what I say in the first place, and if she still doesn't hear me, she nods her head, to belay the fact that she couldn't hear me in the first place.

Women must be trained, you know.

Oh, crap. My wife is standing behind me, reading what I am typing in, isn't she?

My life is over. It's been nice meeting you, Capt Jack.

My wife says 'what' in reply to just about everything I say. I always wondered why, now I know.

Having a shiny new car WILL NOT get you laid. Save your money and have a plan for when you get out.

Now you tell me. All that money wasted and it doesn't even work with the wife.

How would a 20% interest rate NOT get one laid? :P

Double down on that one, just don't buy a new car. Period.

Start investing, even if it's only a little bit. You can't make up for missed compound interest.

ENS (Join to see) - you're my hero. I'm in my mid 40s and just can't get to the TSP portion yet. While on jump status, I did contribute my special pay and deployment money though.

Most young service members don't even know what TSP or SCRA is. It blows my mind. The first thing I do when we receive a new check-in, is talk to them about finances. I bring up TSP and show them exactly what it can do. I ask them if they plan on staying in or getting out (if they are getting out I highly suggest opting into the new system that contributions an additional 5% into TSP). I then go over credit cards, APRs, SCRA, and financial management. It astounds me at how little they know with so much information out there. Perhaps I could design and propose a class for service members to attend throughout the military. I think it could be truly beneficial for everyone.

ENS (Join to see) - I think a class like that is even more valuable for those who have been in a minute. They have had time to see the mistakes of those around them, know a few people who have gotten out of the service unprepared but are still able to start mending their ways. Good idea you have there.

Join nearly 2 million former and current members of the US military, just like you.
