What are free or discounted services for veterans or military members to file taxes?

I'm a veteran and preparing to file my taxes. Services like H&R Block and Turbo Tax have a fee. Are there cheaper options for veterans?

Happy 2024! For 8 years I used HR Block, and I always ended up paying $100 and got no refund. The following tax year 2021 the ordeal was even higher for the same credits and ended up paying over 750 USD over. IRS refunded me the $123 overcharged by HR Block. So I decided to get back to work with Turbo Tax and used the same information they used, I was refunded $1200 for the first time in 10 years. I hope that will help.

Wow! No one has mentioned AARP for filing your basic taxes. I mean, if you own a business, that's leaning a little heavy on AARP's Service! But I have a little invested and my retired income, that's about it; so an appointment at my local library or wherever AARP is working their magic, well, I'm there! Go to the website AARP.org. Find that question mark and search for TAXES . Anyway, that's what I did. First of February it'll prompt you for zip code and tell you what's available in your area of the nation. Get an appt, bring in your papers and I.D. , sometimes they scan it all and have you return a week later, other times it was sit and do it right then. At the end of the process, it is e-sent and within a week the IRS.gov site showed my claim was in their house and gave me an estimate of completion. ( $ in my bank, I overpay, so I always get a refund. It's my forced savings account.) . One year I sold a house and they helped me get that all filed, too. I've enjoyed AARP doing my taxes for about 25 years now, since I retired from the USN in 1999.

I think Turbo Tax is only free filing for enlisted active duty Reservists.

I live in Milwaukee, WI. My federal and state income taxes were done for free by a group from AARP. I didn’t have to be an AARP member. My taxes were done at Milwaukees Wilson Park Senior Center. I’m pretty sure you don’t have to be a senior citizen. All I had to do was fill out a checklist about my income, gather all my paperwork (1099s, W2s, etc), and show up at the time I scheduled online.
