What are my options for different contract lengths Army National Guard service? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-are-my-options-for-different-contract-lengths-army-national-guard-service

I'm very interested in joining the Army, specifically the National Guard. I was speaking to a recruiter and he said something to me about a 2 year contract I could go in with to see how I like the ANG, what are some more details to that? If I do want to keep going could I re-enlist? And how should I go about getting a 2 year contract? I do know that all initial enlistments are for 8 years. A 2 year contract would be for 2 years drilling and 6 years inactive. (I'm only aware of this option for the active component though)

You can ask me questions as I've been in the guard and regular Army most of my life. If you want I can have someone get in touch with you. I do know that there is an 8 year Military service obligation (MSO) no matter what though. FOR EXAMPLE: My initial enlistment was for 6 years but I had to do a total of 8 years no mater what. What that means is 6 years I was actively performing my obligation to the National Guard; if I would have not reenlisted after my initial 6 year contract, then I would have served 2 years in the Inactive Readiness Reserve (pretty much on standby until called upon for an emergency).

As far as reenlisting goes, as long as you maintain the Army standards and do not get into any trouble, then you will be given opportunities to reenlist. Also keep in mind that a 2 year enlistment (If they offer it) might not come with the benefits that you hear about. I have 17 years total in the Military with 7 years Active duty. I understand you wanting to make the right decision, so getting in for a "trial" period might not be the best option, because once you enter service you will be considered prior service and makes things a little more difficult to switching from one to the other. I suggest you think long and hard on what you want to do and weigh your options, compare and contrast pros and cons of each choice. I will be glad to answer more questions to help with your decision, but understand I can't answer recruiting specific questions such as bonuses and things like that. When you enlist, you choose how many years at that time. I would recommend doing a shorter contract if your on the edge, the military is not for everyone, it’s like a try it before you buy it type thing. The only negative thing is you lose all collage benefits that the National Guard has to offer, all except the yearly tuition.
