What are pros and cons between 79R and 79S?

So, I’ve been thinking of my career in the Army, I’m 5 years in now, I’m on orders to Korea for what I hope is a two year accompanied tour (I’m working on getting a command sponsorship), but before head out to Korea I want to try for the SFAB and hopefully get pulled from orders to Korea to do my 3 years in the SFAB. Either way, wether it’s 2 years in Korea or 3 years in the SFAB, I would like to go either 79R or 79S, what are some pros and cons of both jobs, and are they both permanent if you so choose, which has better career progression? I would appreciate everyone’s input, especially if you’ve personally done both.

You don’t get to “reclass” to 79R or 79S. I can’t speak to what a 79S career looks like or how you get the MOS, but I can speak to the 79R side. I was a 79R for 6 years before applying for a commission. To become a 79R, first you need to either be DA Selected or volunteer for Recruiting Duty. If you get selected to serve as a recruiter, youvthen have to be successful before you can apply for conversion to 79R. There is a board in USAREC and your chain of command has to support your request. Then the CG makes the final decision based on the recommendations of your BN and BDE CDRs and CSMs. If you really want to “test” out these jobs, then I would volunteer to be company retention NCO. That’ll give you a taste. Also, to be a 79 series MOS you must be a SSG or above. Both jobs are challenging, I recommend you speak with your BDE Retention NCO, they are a 79S. They just changed the SDAP (Special pay) for career 79s. Basically they took it away and only pay detailed recruiters SDAP. Good luck and let me know if I can answer any more questions.
