I've been in my command for 2 years. I don't have a lot of the ideal extracurricular activities, like a substantial amount of volunteer hours. I'm brainstorming ideas but I'm not sure if the things I'm coming up with are applicable or acceptable.

Officer package applicable and acceptable forms of Extracurricular Activities? Officers have a great many "un-official" obligations they may encounter...in addition to those more "official" collateral duties such as PAO, etc. Someone who already demonstrates the ability to manage a complex matrix of such responsibilities, is who they're looking for. Big Brothers/Big Sisters, Boy Scouts, Rotary, American Legion, various post outreaches, Church activity, etc...etc. They probably aren't looking for things like non-command related sports team participation (though I'm sure it's attractive in other ways), or if you run ultra-marathons. If you didn't pass muster with someone like me, you don't pass GO or collect $200. Extracurricular stuff for those who do well includes some common features. The candidate thinks it's an important investment of their time. They see it as part of their own growth. They see it as an additional learning activity. I could tell through the interview process if any of that was going on vs. just punching a ticket. Be ready to demonstrate how the sidebar stuff has made you a better deal for the Service. Quick ways to build up big projects are habitat for humanity, starting a homeless support program collecting materials and handing them out, tutoring programs at local schools. Remember while doing all of these you are there representing the Navy and what it can do for the non-military community, improving the lives of the local populace.
