What are some best practices to use as a paralegal when speaking with Commanders?

I've recently been moved into military justice from administrative separations and have found myself not only working on packets but being part of the readings as well.
Besides customs and courtesies, are there practices that you find are helpful when dealing with Commanders and their staff? For example, how do you know when to interrupt a Commander if you need to push them in the right direction in an Article 15 and other such situations?

I wouldn't interrupt them. Just let them finish and THEN give your legal opinion as to where they should consider leaning.

Perhaps you can request to brief the commander prior.

"Sir, I have made myself familiar with this case as part of my duty and have some recommendations that you may want to consider"

Prepare a script to go in the Article 15 packet. Also if you recommend they stick to the DA 2627 and go in order that will give them guidance also. Whenever I have a new Commander I will always throw a script in there for them to use on the first several packets until he/she gets the hang of things.
