I'm curious as to what creative ways can we use to do Leader/Soldier development, whether it's training the Soldiers on individual warrior skills or just teaching them topics that will help improve the organization when time is extremely limited due to other work tasks that are priority. What are some creative ways to do Leader/Soldier development in an extremely busy work environment? 2021-02-10T07:23:37-05:00 SSG Private RallyPoint Member 6734744

Leader/Soldier development is something that should be improved in every unit I feel. If you have a team leader out for training, planned medical, or extended leave have the senior SPC step up before the team leader departs and begin learning the role. This is not training by fire, since he/she is actually helping the Squad Leader cover for a missing subordinate leader. Get folks into formal leadership training, be it in person or on line, and then give them chances to practice and share their new new knowledge when they return. Lastly, challenge yourself to get more of your work done through the efforts of others. This makes you push power down and have folks take more responsibility. Therefore, time management is crucial and learned.

But to fit any and all priorities, it will definitely take additional time during any day, week, month, or emergency.

There is ‘no’ shortcuts in learning due to everyone in your command are different; some catch on quickly and some personnel are slow.

For me to maximize my time, I start the break down to plt size lead by Senior Cadre. But obviously, as we all know, the world and our normal duties do not stop.

Your Senior Cadre is your strength for any successfull training/knowledge to be instilled. The command team can not do it all and majority of the time, they’re in the rear; therefore, success is done by Warrior’s boots on the ground.

Hooah. High optempo units it is very rare to get your whole team/squad/plt together outside protected training events. So go into the common area, find joe finger blasting their phone and teach them something. There are a couple of simple approaches. Put a Soldier in charge of a task, even allowing subordinate NCOs to participate as part of the Team following the Soldiers guidance. You step back and observe/coach. Continue this periodically. If you have enough Soldiers pull the NCOs out on occasion, allowing them to observe how the Soldiers, guide and problem solve, allowing them to coach/mentor. Another idea is for NCOs to identify information that should be part of all Soldiers base line knowledge. Have the Soldiers study on off duty time, during these mundane tasks, cleaning the motor pool, tuck March etc., have the NCOs ask questions randomly on random topics, with the Soldiers answering.

It sounds rudimentary, but it works. As time progresses you will find more innovative approaches. Lastly, while the train is running your CSM and 1SG should be developing higher level more focused training for groups of Soldiers that will add to the foundation you have provided. They have the power to impact the training schedule. Team work is the foundation of how you will accomplish everything Soldiers endeavor.
