Throughout the ages, we've been pestered by REMFs (Rear Echelon Mike Foxtrots). I dropped the acronym on some British officers while we were having lunch at the French Military Liaison Mission in Phnom Penh. Apparently we don't have the corner on them. The Colonial just laughed at my explanation saying "You Colonials have a way with words. We call them TIPs; Tactically Insignificant Personnel."

A staff I was on used a term meaning we had to quit brainstorming/BSing and get on with finishing the plan/briefing. They would say we have crossed the GICL ( pronounced Gick-el). The Good Idea Cutoff Line.

In the 80s we used a control measure called the Battle Handoff Line where the CAV would come in and pass the fight to the main defensive force. But in NATO they changed it to the Battle Handover Line, because they didn't understand. american football terms, and to the Brit's a "Hand Off" had a very different meaning.

In the nuclear world, we've got acronyms for every one of the thousands of systems... RCS (reactor coolant system), SSPS (solid state protection system) and on and on.

I use this one to help explain it to cops and other "normal" civilians...

"Well, deputy, remember that we're an IFOA... Industry Full Of Acronyms."

Really surprised have not seen many from line units.. For example, SALUTE.. Size,Activity,Location,Unit,Time,Equipment.. Used for reporting information. I still use this at my job today. Great for gathering info on cut or damaged cable. It is also useful when reporting information to police....

"True Virgins Make Dull Company" (TVMDC) It's an acronym used in piloting to remind navigators of the relationship between True Course (plotted on charts with true north aligned to the poles), Variation (the difference between true north and magnetic north caused by the shifting location of the magnetic influences surrounding the earth), Magnetic North (the direction in which a compass would point if there were no other influences), Deviation (magnetic influences such as the surrounding metal structures of a vessel or aircraft), and Compass Course (the actual bearing compass direction used to make good a course plotted on a chart). The reverse acronym used in converting a compass course so that it can be plotted on a chart is "Can Dead Men Vote Twice" (CDMVT).
