What are some options to help me get out early enough to make the fall semester? https://www.rallypoint.com/answers/what-are-some-options-to-help-me-get-out-early-enough-to-make-the-fall-semester

Hi all, so as far as I know the school drop allows up to 90 days prior and 10 days before the semester start date. My ETS and DEROS are both December 19th of this year. 90 days before then is September 19th which is still not gonna cut it, I would need 14 more days. Is this something I can make up with my ETS leave balance or am I just out of luck? People have varying opinions on this in saying that your leave is used with the adjusted ETS to get you out earlier while others say the army gives you 90 days and you can use your leave on top of that. Any insight or knowledge would be great, thank you. May not be ideal, but might be an option for your first semester. CPT Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 22 Apr 2019 07:52:26 -0400 2019-04-22T07:52:26-04:00 Response by SPC Elijah J. I got out last November, and started a program in January. Is there a reason you can't start in the Spring? Why do you want to start in the Fall? I understand wanting to get out as soon as you can.
I have generally heard that you cannot combine leave with an early separation. If your Commander has heard the same, you're probably out of luck, even if it is wrong. Just get out in December, sell your leave, and start in January.
And pay attention to BAH and scholarships and such. See if the Post 9/11 GI Bill makes sense for you. I'm on an academic scholarship, so if I were using the Post 9/11 I'd just get BAH and the book allowance. Using the plussed up Montgomery GI Bill makes a difference of a few hundred dollars per month. SPC Elijah J. I can speak to getting out of the service and going to school.

I appreciate your exuberance and desire to gain worldly knowledge. Years and years ago I started my education too. I am still trying to learn and understand the things that I study and research. Semesters come and go. If I may make a suggestion, the most important thing is that you establish a foundation for your transition into the civilian world. Transitioning into the civilian world is more than going through all of the classes and checking all the boxes on your journey toward your ETS date. The civilian world and the military include some overlap in values, but the contexts are mostly different.

In other words, take your time. School, college, vocational training, job training, or university will be there when you complete your service.

Good Luck! My anniversary date/ETS was supposed to be November 9, 2003. My ship was decommissioning at the end of August and it was dumb for the military to put me temporary duty for 2.5 months.

My ETS was adjusted 90 days early: August 9, 2003. First day of classes was August 14. Also, I went on terminal leave on June 29...

I'm sure the rules have changed or been modified since then. The ship decommissioning worked in my favor. Good luck to you! PO3 Private RallyPoint Member Mon, 22 Apr 2019 23:48:40 -0400 2019-04-22T23:48:40-04:00 2019-04-22T03:50:35-04:00
