What are some ways units can go about enforcing a stronger OPSEC posture and spread OPSEC awareness.

Just looking for some creative and effective ideas. I've heard of unit's banning social media sites, and I'm not so sure that's the best fix for the problem.

First things first banning social media is actually against Army policy. Not regulation but the Army wants people to use social media.
Also OPSEC is not an intel function. Hopefully your unit knows that. It's just a pet peeve. Neither is PHYSEC.

I feel like banning social media would just make soldiers go out of their way to do it more, or would be less likely to be safe. Its like abstinence only education in sex ed, they are going to do it anyway, might as well teach them to do it safe.

Talking about OPSEC is the best way to improve OPSEC. I went through the OPSEC training a few years back and being vocal and teaching others is the ideal method to increase awareness and effectiveness of OPSEC.

There are actually some good power points out there that break down social media and OPSEC together. Even I learned something with one a found a few months ago for company training. The problem is most soldiers these days grew up on social media and haven't taken time to think about the consequences. Just have to keep educating them...one day they might get it. If you want the Army approved social media training I found please feel free to message me and I will send it your way.
