What are "Temporary enlistments" as discussed in 10 U.S. Code § 518 -?

Temporary enlistments may be made only in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or Coast Guard, as the case may be, without specification of component.

Respectfully, you posted the US code, with its original reference from 1968. You actually have the answer.
Simply read it, as reposting pages of the US Code here is a bit impractical.

10 USC 519 refers to times of war declared by Congress plus 6 months. Search for temporary enlistments brought up decision of comptroller regarding enlisted person in Coast Guard entitlements, but appeared to be under a different law.
