One of my old Commanders gave me
Turn this Ship Around by L. David Marquet as a PCS gift. I still have it to this day and it completely changed not only how I viewed myself but how I viewed others. I was a PFC then and it was great to have a CPT, give me a book on leadership because it showed that he thought I had potential.

Some are historical and offer that perspective. Others are instructional and rudimentary. These were on young NCO reading list years ago. There is probably a US Army variation of "Handbook for Marine NCO's".

Here are the ones I've read, SGT!

When my Dad was a young LT, he had a great Squad Leader; really squared him away. He ended up being my Dad's CSM. His recommendation for a leadership book was "Leader ship in the Shadows: Special Operations Soldier" by SGM Kyle Lamb. Would mentor his NCO's out of it, according to my Dad. We ended up buying it together a couple months ago and read through it. I found it very insightful and a great read. Currently sitting at 4.8/5 with 100 reviews on Amazon.

Edit: I had to go find the other one. My parents bought it for me when I graduated basic. My DS recommended "Black Hearts: One Platoon's Descent into Madness in Iraq's Triangle of Death" by Jim Frederick. This one is a brutal read, but very interesting. Although seemed to focus more towards brass and less for the average joe. My main takeaways were "Don't leave your companies to fend for themselves on a deployment" and "check up more on your soldiers." Both of which seemed pretty common sense to me. 4.7/5 with 506 reviews.

I ran across this, and don't know how current it is. Some good reads there. The Commandant's Reading List was revived by CMC Gen. Gray (former USMC Sgt), and incorporated into PME for all ranks. Whether he knew it or not he prepared the USMC for DS, by going back to basics with all levels of training. The Art Of War by Sun Tzu, it’s very comprehensive on administration, maintaining morale, and military strategies that are still very relevant today. War never really changes much, the goals are the same, but the weapons change, and with that leadership needs to change with battlefield realities. Not all are the tip of the spear, but every MOS is directly tied to providing them with the support to win the fight.

Extreme ownership, Dichotomy of leadership and leadership strategy and tactics, by Jocko Willink are awsom books for leadership training that carry over into civilian leadership as well. I wish I had read these while I was still in the military but they help me daily in my civilian career.
