Without a doubt, there are truly some great resources available to active and Reserve component personnel and veterans. Of course, if folks don't know that they're out there, members and their families couldn't possibly benefit from some of these amazing offers and services. So, the idea here is to share those helpful tidbits of information, tips, links, lessons learned, processes, resources, wisdom and/or POCs to help members find the resources they need for their troops, their families, and to help themselves. Just a couple of quick admin notes, please make sure to share the source if known, and remember to post in accordance with RallyPoint guidelines. Well, I'm certain that will be a great way to get timely information, resources, and assistance to those who need it most, when they need it the most... so, if you have something useful, helpful, or good-to-know, please feel free to share. I dont know if this is related, but, after being out of the Corps for 30 yrs., and many people telling me to get signed up, I finally got registered at the VA, they tell me I have a claim because I was stationed at Camp Lejuene and Geiger in the early 80's when they were contaminating the ground water and I've had several bouts with cancer,.
Now that I am registered(I think) I have a 4 month wait before they will call me to get an appointment to be seen and be assigned a primary care physician AND I have to make a separate trip to a different location to file my claim! IN the mean while, I have no medical coverage on my current job, I think my cancer is back again, and the local VA in Phx., AZ is under investigation for reports of purposely letting patients die waiting for treatment and since I work swing shift I cant afford to repeatedly take time off to play the waiting game in the VA offices...Any thoughts or ideas on actions I can take?

I believe that one of the greatest resources for veterans and service members is right in front of me now. There are ways and means of contacting our connections without the entire forum being involved if that is the way the individual wants it. Or they can seek help in an open forum, I have received help from more than one pastor/chaplain when I needed it a few weeks ago. Seek out the people who can help you the most with what you are having problems. I also use the VFW, the American Legion, and Disabled American Veterans on top of the VA for specific needs. This is my opinion, and the answers provided here are great, giving more suggestions than I could come up with.

One thing that bums me out a bit since it effects me adversely is that most organizations to assist vets for rent or that sort of thing are only for combat or deployed vets. Now don't get me wrong ok, i'm not saying that they shouldnt get the lions share of help, what I am saying is that vets like me who were in a garrisoned unit while in service have little to no resources for help that I have found.

I was passing through Kandahar Air force Base in Afghanistan, and was anxiously awaiting my wife to get on Facebook so that we could talk. I came across an article about a soldier who did not get a job because he was not dressed in proper business attire, and it saddened and infuriated me. He had a good education and more credentials than his friend who ended up getting the job. The reason - His friend wore a suit. When my wife got online I told her I wanted to start a nonprofit to benefit all veterans and provide them suits for interviews, so this would not happen again.

I would add in to the mix to put your resume together and go on usajobs.gov. Many government agencies have job openings that many vets can fill. Many public libraries have resume help classes. Your military service counts towards your govt service time and depending on the era you served and if you served in combat, you can get upwards to a 10-15 point hiring preference. Even if you think you can't do it, apply anyway. Many agencies are being encouraged to hire Vets thanks to the President's initiatives.

MilitaryWarriors.org is a great .org that will really help disabled vets and gold star spouses. I actually have a house that was donated to my family. If you do not have a mortgage and have a disability rating from the VA you can apply. They have houses all over the country and Will help you.

Operation Homefront does this too.

For vets looking to reconnect and serve a purpose again TeamRubiconUSA.org is the place for you to sign up. They have really saved me from feeling worthless in the past years since my med board.

USACares.org helped me when I first got out with paying a little on some bills while I waited on my VA Rating. OperationHomefront.org helped me as well and paid two months of my bills.

Wounded Warrior Project is okay, they are good if you want tickets for something. Same with IAVA.org,

For a great camp Family Warrior Weekends! The folks there are really dedicated in helping us. Kate is the best and her staff is absolutely wonderful. If you need some time with your family and a great weekend to reconnect this is the place for you. The time you will get with fellow vets around the campfire is a really wonderful experience and you will feel like you were back in. Here is the website to sign up as well as the dates. I promise you will not be disappointed.

August 15-17, September 12-14, November 7-9 These weekends are for Service Members and Veterans and their families (if they choose to bring them. All ages of children welcome!) who experienced combat service in Iraq and/or Afghanistan from September 2001-present.

As a Veteran transitions out of the service and starts on the path to finding a new career, there is no shortage of things that must be considered, planned and prepared for. The most important in most cases is finding employment upon leaving the service.

Since this is quite possibly the most important thing a Veteran does during the transition, why does it seem that it’s the one thing that most Veterans are most ill-equipped to do? As I have spent the last year since leaving the active Army working as a Program Manager for Veteran Hiring Initiatives, I have noticed some trends in how Veterans approach post military employment.

Here are my observations:

1. Paycheck – The entire reason that we work is so we can earn money and take care of our families and ourselves. In the course of dealing with Veterans looking for jobs, I have noticed two trends that bother me a great deal. The first is the salary/pay expectation of the average Veteran, which seems to be well above their market value. Just because you were a high level manager in the military, does not mean you will get the comparable job in the civilian sector – anymore than the Army would take a corporate executive and immediately make him/her a Battalion Commander if he/she decided to suddenly join the Army. Think about it – you are starting over, and you need to take the opportunities that are presented, even if the salary is not up to your perceived worth. Secondly, and this is the point of this post, pay is only one part of the equation, and I have watched many Veterans throw away opportunities because the salary was 10K lower than they wanted, when everything else was exactly what they wanted/needed for themselves and their families.

2. Location – Are you open to moving to where the opportunities are? One of the most common issues I run into is an unwillingness from Veterans to move to the places where opportunities are the most plentiful. Just because you move to an area of the country that isn’t ideal for you, doesn’t mean you have to live there for the rest of your life, but it may be the best place to get your career rolling in the right direction. The short of it – be open to location.

3. Culture – Does the company that you are attempting to go to work for fit you as a person? Culture is one of the most important considerations that you must think about when starting out on a new career. Do the values of the organization fit with yours? What kind of business goals does the company have, and do they compliment your career aspirations? No matter how good the paycheck is, if you are not a good fit on the team, you will be miserable and much more likely to be unsuccessful in the position.

4. Ask yourself the right questions – When you look at a position as you leave the service, are you really looking at what you want to do for a living? Are you finding a corporate culture that compliments your own values and aspirations? Are you pigeonholing yourself by only wanting to move to a specific city/state? Does the paycheck get in the ballpark of your expectations?

You must look at a career search holistically. Amidst all the noise about resumes, interviewing, and preparing to make yourself attractive to civilian employers, remember to take time to make sure you are developing a situation that is going to be of all around benefit to you and your family if you have one. Flexibility is key, and once you land the position, you can then proceed to show your new employer why hiring a Veteran is one of the best business decisions they can make.

GRE and GMAT Reimbursement - DANTES reimburses the GMAT or GRE General fee for eligible military personnel. (Use it! Even if you don't plan on going to school, the test scores are good for up to 5 years at most schools, so you don't have to worry about shelling out for the test if you decide to go later on. Worst case, you got some practice in. Does take some leg work going to the education center and getting your paper work in line and you have to pay up front so make sure you check all the right steps).

Benefits Delivery at Discharge (BDD) - BDD allows a service member to submit a claim for disability compensation 60 to 180 days prior to separation, retirement, or release from active duty or demobilization. BDD can help you receive VA disability benefits sooner, with a goal of within 60 days after release or discharge. (Do this! You can always add claims later. Complete this as soon as you get your final physical done. Check your local VA rep on base for details and help on submitting. I received my claims within 8-9 months - not exactly 60 days, but better than getting stuck in the system for years).

Veterans Upward Bound (VUB) is a free U.S. Department of Education TRIO program designed to help eligible U.S. military veterans enter and succeed in the postsecondary school of their choosing. To benefit from the free educational services offered by VUB, veterans must meet a few simple eligibility requirements:

Participants must:
- have at over 180 days of active duty service, or
- if less than 180 days, must be discharged or released because of a service connected disability, or
- be member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces called to active duty for a period of more than 30 days, or
-be a member of a reserve component of the Armed Forces who served on active duty in support of a contingency operation on or after September 11, 2001.
- all discharges qualify except dishonorable.

All participants must be either low-income (based on family income and number of dependents) or potential first generation college students (neither parent earned a 4-year degree).
If you want to go back to school, but it has been a few years since you've been in a classroom setting, or if you could use a free refresher program to help knock the rust off of your skills, contact the veteran-friendly staff at a VUB program near you. Our program creates partnerships between Military personnel, pro bono Attorneys, and the Partners in Philanthropy who provide funding for our organization. When bankruptcy becomes necessary, Military Assistance Project provides servicemen and servicewomen with attorneys and legal resources to enable them to obtain a fresh start.

By all, I mean all. Discharge status, peacetime, none of thst matters. All of the counselors are local who have signed up to provide a year of weekly counseling to Vets. I have personally used them and they are legit.

This thread has been in rotation for over 4 years now. There are innumerable resources that cross a myriad of subjects. It is my belief that this thread, and threads like it, are one of the main reasons RP was created and continues to exist.
While it is not a 'catchy' thread, it stays relevant, current, and with a bunch of work, available for any who need to find a RESOURCE in this vast internet sea of information. I hope to find some time this summer to better organize it so we improve our assistance capabilities in the future.
