Isn't it all basically the same skill set? Why the differentiation or duplication? Why is there a special school for SOF? Is it really that much different/better?

They are similar in shooting skills, but much different in field craft and weapons. Many of the techniques are different. There is a big difference in using an XM21, M40 or a Barrett.

From what I understand field craft is the fundamental difference. Shooting fundamentals and the math/physics that go into long range shooting are fairly universal. I'm sure there are some instructional things that are service unique and unit specific. I'd like to be able to audit the different courses and learn the lessons so I could better answer the question! LOL

It's pretty much what TSGT LaPointe said. Certain fundamental blocks the school house train you up on. USASS teaches you the ground basics while going to SOTIC might teach you advanced level things (being that it is an interdiction course). All and all, the fundamentals of SHOOTING as a sniper or trained long range marksman will always be the same.
