I'm a 42R (Musician), my wife is an MU (musician) in the Navy. I have talked to many recruiters in the past with little help. I have auditioned before and was close to getting in (entrance is contingent on an audition first). I have received a conditional release from my command in the past and they are aware of my intention to attempt again. The real question, is how to convert time in the Guard to active time to see how it does or doesn't benefit me when considering age requirements. As far as transfers from Guards/Reserves, I do know for a fact that the parent component has to release you...and that typically the receiving component has to accept you for a rating/billet (get used to strange Navy-lingo) that you can't perform in the parent component. Just a thought, but it may be a less harrowing ordeal to attempt to transfer from the Guard to the Navy Reserves, then try for activation from there. In general however, it's all about how many people they can't operate without vs. how much money is available to pay for them.

Just out of curiosity...what has you thinking of making the switch? As a guardsman, the state owns you, however, I have seen many National Guard CoC's support moves such as this in the past. Bottom line: Talk to your CoC, if they support it, then find a Navy recruiter.
