PFC Private RallyPoint Member8990069<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>So as a holder of a 3-year Minuteman Scholarship from the WAARNG going to the Citadel in SC for college (undergrad aka bachelors) - when I come back to WA State for the portion of the minuteman contract that makes me serve 8 years in the guard, what is the chance that I could request to be released to active duty (after being commissioned as a 2nd LT)?What is the likelihood that I could get a DD Form 368 approved?2025-06-11T14:38:20-04:00PFC Private RallyPoint Member8990069<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>So as a holder of a 3-year Minuteman Scholarship from the WAARNG going to the Citadel in SC for college (undergrad aka bachelors) - when I come back to WA State for the portion of the minuteman contract that makes me serve 8 years in the guard, what is the chance that I could request to be released to active duty (after being commissioned as a 2nd LT)?What is the likelihood that I could get a DD Form 368 approved?2025-06-11T14:38:20-04:002025-06-11T14:38:20-04:00COL John McClellan8990092<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>Normally all ROTC Cadets have the opportunity to compete for active duty assignment, but in your case with this special scholarship - I think you'd need to ask either your cadre, or, the office that issued that scholarship, what rules apply. Online information says that it's a flavor of the GRFD - Guaranteed Reserved Forces Duty - so you must have been briefed when you accepted it??Response by COL John McClellan made Jun 11 at 2025 3:13 PM2025-06-11T15:13:43-04:002025-06-11T15:13:43-04:00SGM Jeff Mccloud8992657<div class="images-v2-count-0"></div>"All nominees will be made aware that the scholarship they are accepting is a dedicated GRFD and CANNOT BE REVOKED to allow the applicant to compete for an active-duty commission."<br /><br />That said, if at some point during your WA ARNG duty, you happen to qualify for one of the categories needed in the call to active duty messages, and get accepted, then the Guard will have a reason to approve a release.<br />But that TAG does not have to approve the release and those call to active duty messages are rare and not guaranteed, they were more common during the war.<br />For example now through 30 SEP they are only taking LTs in Cyber and EOD.<br /><br />In order to be ready in case the opportunity does come up, you should complete your CCC as a 1LT in order to be competitive. And continue to check out the current CAD needs on HRC (CAC required). <br /><br /><a target="_blank" href="https://www.hrc.army.mil/content/Call%20to%20Active%20Duty%20Program">https://www.hrc.army.mil/content/Call%20to%20Active%20Duty%20Program</a> <div class="pta-link-card answers-template-image type-default">

Going active duty may not be an option. On the other hand, don't forget that ARNG units have full-time support personnel... and headquarters units have some full-time officers. If you have a sterling reputation in your unit you will be able to compete for one (or more) of these positions. Take additional duty assignments. Never do the minimum required. Volunteer for extra duty and training as it becomes available. Build a solid reputation and you should be able to get a strong endorsement for a full-time position.Response by Maj Bruce Pawlak made Jul 5 at 2025 7:21 PM2025-07-05T19:21:52-04:002025-07-05T19:21:52-04:002025-06-11T14:38:20-04:00
