You know what he couldn&#39;t do? Push ups. So his life sucked all the same. About a year before I enlisted I started running, but I wasn&#39;t concerned about pace or distance. I just kept running and started adding another corner, store, or other landmark. In short, I ran until I was done. I was in pretty good shape when I left for basic and stayed in the fast group. But here is what I CAN tell you:<br /><br />The specifics don&#39;t matter. If you go in to Basic Training (do NOT call it Boot Camp, by the way, that will earn you pain) in reasonably adequate shape, the Drill Sergeants WILL get you into good enough shape to graduate. It is their JOB and they are damned good at it.<br /><br />When I joined I could do a bunch of push-ups. But I couldn&#39;t do more than a couple ARMY pushups. By the time I graduated basic I was doing 70 in my 2 minutes. I was a decent runner, completing the 2-mile in around 15 minutes. By the time I graduated, I was under 12. And situps - well, I struggled to do 20 in ANY amount of time. I graduated doing around 60 in 2 minutes.<br /><br />Go to Basic in decent shape, and willing to work.
