I am 26 married with a family looking to join the guard. My goal is to serve and to learn a trade and skill that will help me be successful in a civilian career. I talked to a recruiter and this MOS is one of the top ones in central Florida as far as availability due to there being plenty of units to choose from and bonus “20k”. He also mentioned there is something called a “tech” job available in some units and would like to know how difficult or easy it is to land that job with the guard. Also what kind of units would be the best go to option if possible. Thanks for the help!Sun, 24 Feb 2019 12:46:39 -0500What are the pros and cons of being a 91B (light wheeled mechanic), and how can this MOS help you in the civilian world?

For list a list of certifications available for 91B and all the MOS' in the Army. Goto the Army COOL website at http://www.cool.army.mil. Some certificates you may get right away after graduation of AIT, others may have additional requirements.

Don't let the recruiter make you think you'll immediately get a technician job out the gate. Can it happen? Yes, but by no means is it guaranteed right out the gate. In the Guard, it's not what you know but who you know. NCOs, Specialists, and more experienced Privates in your prospective MOS are going to be applying for those jobs too. Not to mention there are the guys who may be "insert random MOS here" in the Guard but are actual ASE Certified Technicians civilian side who may apply as well. I'm not trying to be a debbie downer but I just want you to be realistic. But combine the certs you'll get from the MOS, or any trade oriented MOS in the Army and a little college or trade school with your newly earned GI Bill and tuition assistance, and a new career is just around the corner.

As far as units go, outside of supporting the Civil Support Teams(CSTs), and 20th Special Forces Group, the best Battalion in all the Florida National Guard is 2nd Battalion, 116th Field Artillery. You'll love supporting their vehicles on the ground.

Good luck.

Entry level is usually WG8 with 5 pay raise or step increases. After a probationary period you can often board for higher WG positions or GS pay areas such as a production controller. As a technician, most states will not allow you to receive the sign on bonus or you may have to pay a bonus back. Also, tri-care insurance may not be available to techs(often times it is Bluecross blue shield FED, varies by region). Make sure to ask the recruiter about what benefits techs don’t get compared to traditional M-day soldiers. This might make you re-think the tech world.

It's the main reason I picked the MOS.
I won't lie the AIT is not sufficient enough in it's training, it lacks tool training, have old vehicles, and doesn't challenge the individual enough in thinking on the job, in my opinion.
Since I've joined my unit I've learned a lot, thanks to my NCO's and people who just know more in general, be it lower ranking or not.

The greatest perks of being a 91B from my POV (I'm USAR so just keep that in mind):
-learn the general layout of a vehicle
-earn different licenses/experience, this can lead up to a CDL license
-camaraderie among mechanics, at least that's my experience
-working and moving about instead of being stuck in an office
-easy to cross train in other 91-series MOS'
-you are always needed, so you can practically go anywhere
-Mechanics are always needed be it civilian or military, you wont get a job based solely on your army training if that's all you have (personal experience), but it will help the organizations based in the army that help veterans and soldiers find jobs outside the military find work (google: P3 army)

Cons:
-If you get oil stains on your OCPs/ACUs by regulation you aren't technically allowed to wear them, which may cost you
-lots of PPE, depending on your unit will depend on the strictness of PPE, which may become to cumbersome
-weather can be difficult, wither be super cold or super hot
-civilian jobs wont hire you purely on army experience
-stealing tools is common, lock your toolboxes up because if you signed up for something and its gone cause someone snatched guess who has to pay for it? Hint: You
-there are slackers and you may get bogged down on work, but what MOS doesn't deal with that? It really depends on the unit.
-Injuries are uncommon but it has as much threat as a regular civilian mechanic

That's all I got, hope it helped you out a little bit even if we are in different components. As for 'tech jobs' he may mean computers, I was offered that as well but I didn't want to be cooped in an office all day, but that's just my two-cents.SPC Private RallyPoint MemberSat, 08 Jun 2019 18:23:19 -04002019-06-08T18:23:19-04:00Response by SPC Private RallyPoint Member made Jun 13 at 2019 1:53 AM

I am a 91b and I can tell you but its up to you. If you just enjoy working on vehicles on your free time them don't choose this job. I wish I had chosen a better job but but remember it's you who have to do the work not the person telling you how good it is.
